Does anyone know what it would cost to take 30 kilgrams over the limit on a domestic Ukrainian flight.
I just came back from Ukraine (surprise) and flew domestically from Simferopol to Kiev carrying around 30 kilos more in bagage than the limit was supposed to be. In a very hush-hush way - one of the ladies at the weigh in station suggested to my lady that it would be much less expensive to pay the official - a important looking man, with some authority, who quietly had out luggage put on the plane without any additional "offical" payment. After this was done, this official asked for 150 grievna.
Now I KNOW what happened here - its the way things are done in Ukraine - a BRIBE was given to this official. But at 150 grievna for 30 kilos, was it at least a good deal bribe?
jet,
I have no idea except to say that, if charged, it is normally expensive and please bear in mind that dependant upon the type of aircraft and the route flown that if a number of people take excess, and the aircraft needs more weight in fuel to carry it, then the aircraft might not get off the ground thus they reserve the right to refuse carriage of the excess.
It might prove cheaper and with less risk to take a taxi!
"i think in this case ,as soon as you leave the lady in the ticket box and the your lady (the pole dancer) "
Is this the same danny who had a hissy-fit when he though I called his ugly lady a dog? The very same danny who's buying his lady a house in the hope that she doesn't kick him out (till its built anyway) and who thinks he might be its father?
danny, when will you learn that if you attack another man's lady - then your own dog (I mean lady.. I really did) is fair game?
And right now I bet she would like to play a game of fetch - go get a bone danny and throw it to her - see if she brings it back. Maybe she'll come back with the REAL father's bone?
When the house is built and danny's paid for it, and irina kicks danny out - will she keep it - or sell it and split the money with the baby's REAL father?
that was quite cheap Jet last time I travelled I was just 6 kilos over and they wanted over 30 euros or roughly 210 ukranian I promptly dumped some books I was finished reading and it was fine.
colin,
Which airline was that with? Being only 6 kilos over is often turned a blind eye to, I've travelled 5 kilos over before without a problem, let's start a blacklist of airlines that charge and airlines that don't :)
If you got one of those cheap air tickets they were selling on the Internet ($10 US one way) that would triple your cost. How many Kilos are you allowed to carry. It seems like I saw someplace on an international flight extra luggage cost $25 per piece. I do not know where, maybe on one of my flight confirmations. 30 kilos (66 lbs+-) would be two pieces at a 50 lb limit per piece. So by the piece it would be a bargain but by the mile I think you got stung.
If you bribe (buy your ticket from) the captain of a train for a seat when you did not have enough time to buy one it is about the same price as it would be at the ticket window. I do not think officials have a problem figuring out what is the most a foreigner will pay for a bribe.
oz,
Excess baggage is normally charged by the kilo, it costs the airline extra fuel, by weight, to carry it, approx 4% of the weight burnt in fuel per hour to carry it, so if they charge by the piece then they must have a maximum weight per piece.
Jet you got one heck of a deal. According to http://www.ukraine-international.com/eng/information-and-services/before-you-fly /baggage/allowances.html if I read right it costs 10euros or 15 US dollars per kilo. Wow that would be $450 for 30 kilos. You might be better off throwing it away and buying new at your destination or giving it a name and passport and buying a ticket for it.
oz,
If the airline carries the excess weight for 1 flight hour then it will cost the airline a mere 3% of the weight in fuel to carry it. On the other hand, if an airline carries it on a 15 hours flight then it's going to cost the airline, and without getting my calculator out, something like 60% of the weight in fuel but the excessive charges are to deter people from taking it because if they all take it then the aircraft simply won't be able to carry it.
In theory that all sounds normal. The problem is the weight bypasses the knowledge of the airlines. Now say the extra weight will be on the plane for 15 hours or 60% of a kilogram = 1.3 lbs plus or minus so the plane would haul 5 kilos on a gallon of fuel or between 1 and 2 dollars a kilo. Some how whether it is reducing the price of the luggage, raising the price of the tickets, or another means they need all of that luggage going through the scales so that they know how heavy their plane is before they take off and if it will take off. But this way they do not have a clue how much weight they are carrying. Not to mention the airlines are not getting any money because nobody is paying it.
If a plane crashes because it cannot get high enough fast enough every 4 or 5 years the right people do not care, drag another old plane out of the weeds and get it running and there will be more people come from where the last ones did to ride it.
oz,
Basically if the plane is significantly over MTOW (max take off weight) then it goes straight off the end of the runway. If it is carrying more weight, but below MTOW, than the loadsheet declares then it will use more fuel which will show up on the fuel gauges thus it will probably not make it to it's destination which might particularly become a problem if it is flying over an expanse of water.
So you can measure how far the plane went and that tells you how much overweight it was. But wouldn't it be nice to know who had too much luggage so you could put a special note on their tombstone.
Aircraft fuel burn isn't an exact science what with variable weather conditions. not attaining the optimum cruising level as soon as practical, being instructed to speed up, slow down etc. hence they normally carry more fuel than the computer may have calculated.
I was near to Malpensa airport the other week and chatting with a pilot over breakfast he has arrived in to the airport the evening before during some serious thunderstorm activity, all aircraft eventually landed at Malpensa except three and those three were all operated by 'Easyjet' who had obviously issued a company instruction that if the crews carry more fuel than the minimum required then heads will roll. They might save a minimal amount of dollars per sector carrying the minimum fuel but the cost of diverting three aircraft cost them thousands.
Yeah... Land of Oz, you've got it. I risked killing a whole plane full of people by carrying a whole 30 kilos extra on board. Thats 66 extra pounds.
You do have a flare for being a little melodramatic.
Tell me - do they weigh the passengers before they sell them tickets? Or do you suppose the airline dtermines just how much fuel is to be used based on passenger weight?
So a man who weights 246 pounds is TWICE the threat to those same passengers as a woman who might weigh 114 pounds. The difference between their weights is 132 pounds - TWICE the 66 pounds I brought on.
I seem to recall an earlier profile picture you posted where you seemed a little overweight. PLEASE GO ON A DIET or DON'T FLY! Because the way you are you risk killing all of the other passengers - far beyond anything I did.
And on their tombstones we can right "Land of Oz just had to have that extra piece of PIZZA!"
From memory the nominal weight for a male + baggage was 86k and I think a female was -10k off that figure, when things get tight, because theoretically those figures are exaggerated, they do weigh baggage and I've even known passengers being asked to stand on the check-in scales before now.
When I worked for one cargo airline one aircraft found a novel way of saving weight, both engines on the same wing of a B707 fell off in flight resulting in the fuel, on fire, pissing out of the wing ..... and the crew got it down and survived to tell the story :)
I am flattered Jet that you were interested enough in me to have ingrained my body features from an earlier icon I used into your mind or saved it so you would be able to look at it from time to time. But you are not my type.
I have always taken a train internally in Ukraine and fortunately they do not have a weight limit. By the time I get to kiev I do not trust my flight schedule enough to have yet another flight behind it. I like the trains especially when my lady accompanies me.
In my post I Made lite of the passengers carrying excess baggage because I was getting bored with the information and the thought of gauging the weight of the plane by how far it made it rather than projecting a safe flight by calculating the weight carried. I am sure a safety is built into the weight factor.
86 kilograms for a male passenger plus luggage seems very light especially when domestic flights allow 30 kg of checked luggage and 10 of carry on. If they carried full capacity of luggage the average weight of a male would need to be 46 kilos or 101 lbs and the average of a woman would need to be 36 kilos or 79 lbs. Even at half the allowed luggage an average man would be 145 lbs and a woman 123 lbs.
But when it is all said and done I really do not care and it is a subject going nowhere. If the airlines cannot figure it out Martin can help them.
