I am living in Ukraine and there trading any CD or DVD right on the street for 20-30UH (3-4$). Any new films, but we dont buy it, because can download from network for free ).
But I have a question for you about EMS. I want to order 10-20 pcs of electronic from china. Value about 1000$, shiping value 170-190$. I am ready to pay delivery, but tell to me it is not necessary to pay in additional taxes?
Just a thought: I'm aware that DVD's come with a Region Code and only some players can show DVD's from any region. Are the electronics you're ordering going to be usable in Ukraine? Proper current, voltages, channels, etc.?
Hello everyone. My experiences. sent letter to my girl and cost few $. Then wanted send her Rosetta Stone (entire package like $650). She lived near Odessa. Cost me $40 US post office plus purchased insurance (which may have been mistake because dollar value of item is now printed for all to see on outside of package. She got notice pick up parcel local post office. Post office wanted $350 from her before giving package (she didnt lie i saw receipt when I arrived to meet her again). Luckily, after enough time expired I reported item as lost since it never got to recipient. 3 weeks later was on my porch (no charge). Returned item for full refund. Not a terrible ending except- my girl asked me to send her some money shortly before my arrival because her office suspended pay to workers and she had to pay rent. Was like $250. Few weeks after my arrival back home. she asks for money to pick up parcel. this was b4 i reported lost. i said ok, how much of the $350 do u need. i gave u $250 and u have been paid now from work right? she WENT OFF on me. no longer my girl. :)
Would you call this girl a scammer, Chuck? Which is more likely to go off on you, a scammer or one who is serious about you?
I once sent a whole bunch of DVD's, movies, Gilligan's Island, Gomer Pyle, what I thought they would enjoy there. Out of about two dozen parcels that I sent in the past few years, this is the one that got lost. About 25 days ago, I sent chocolates. It cost about $10 from Walmart and about $30 in postage. They were excited about it in Ukraine, to taste American chocolates, but it has not arrived.
Going very slightly off topic, but does anyone know of a courier service FROM ukraine to UK, Kiev in particular? DHL is the only one i`ve found but far too expensive. It`s a few small boxes of womans clothes etc.
RB- no not a scammer. I made many mistakes with her. Some of the mistakes have appeared in other posts here. When I met her on 2nd trip (i had 2 dates with her 1st trip)- I brought her one red rose on our first visit together. But I did not get her gift. She even gave me a gift on our first visit. Then I made it worse by having her help me pick out a gift for my son at a store and again- I never offered her anything! I also forgot to open doors for her. I am not used to this- it was new to me. That is generally not practiced here. She did not complain about any of these things and never asked me to buy anything for her. So, when she went off on me in her email she described several of my mistakes. I dont see why she went off on me when I had sent her $250 when she needed it. That was my huge red flag. So I beleive it was my errors in treatment to her and the fact that she has bad temper. So, I am glad that it worked out the way it did. I dont want to spend rest or part of my life with someone like that. BTW- she was also pissed b/c I didnt try hard enough to sleep with her. But thats another story.
A funny side note. You should have seen the look im eyes when she opened a can of vegetables using only a knife faster than any of us could open it with a can opener! Shock at first, but then appreciation.
My fist trip to Ukraine was with a tour and second on my own to meet with two women whom I met my 1st trip and had been corresponding with. I spent 1 week with each girl. So, the first two trips boiled down to a learning curve/experience for me. An expensive one, but I can afford it. And a great learning experience. Funny thing is, on my 2nd trip I asked out one of the agency employees. We had dinner that night and had a great time together. We both meet each other's criteria. I would highly recommend to anyone pursuing a wife over there to try and pick someone that speaks english. This not only saves on translator costs and other costs- but you will be able to actually communicate with them on a higher and more meaningful level.
But no RB- no lost parcels. Other than the Rosseta Stone, I sent one letter each to the two girls and both received them.
One last note- I sent my girl flowers. She was so touched "that i showed her attention" that she cried. So I guess sending flowers really works well and is a superb idea. We Skype constantly. And I have already had (dreaded) discussion of a pre-nup with her and she is fine with it as long as it is fair (dosent take advantage of her). I will be going their soon and taking her to Paris for 1 week where I will propose! Happy ending! :-)
From what I have experienced with Slavic women, they will not argue with you in public, but if they have "claimed you" as their own, you will get it in private. Then it will be as though it is all your fault for not reading her mind (or mood). (The same everywhere). What has worked for me is that I just accept it and expect her to accept it as well. I just say, "O.K. today we fight,,, tomorrow we make love". I just make her decide which path we take. Of course you must remain rational and not be a "jack-ass". There are differences in culture and expectations. Each has predetermined ideas of how a relationship should be, but if your woman is not happy, you will not be happy. The man may be the leader in life, but the woman will create the mood..... Unless you are that "jack-ass" and you create the mood.
I think that Chuck has illustrated how sending an expensive gift too early in a relationship can cause emotional conflict and an economic burden for someone in a difficult economic situation. I have known people that have won jewelry, boats and furniture on television game shows, only to get stuck with income tax liabilities on inflated values for items they do not truly want and cannot resale at a price to cover that liability.
I don't think this woman was a scammer, I think she was in a panic and then, very embarrassed. Quite possibly, a loss for each of you.
Manners too, was on my learning curve on my first visit. She hit me on the head when I didn't help her off the bus. I usually eat with just a fork. I only use a spoon for soup. She told me to use a spoon and fork. Also a big mistake on my first visit was not learning Russian.
The package of chocolates has not arrived. The post office is now asking for a receipt number. I did not keep the receipt. Her name and address, my name and address is there. Why would they need a receipt number? I can send another package. How frustrating it must be for them.r
One disadvantage for those who don't learn Russian, is that they won't be able to read the signs printed on all of those doors, asking people to hold them open (for the person coming behind). I try to be careful about this, when using the metro.
Send it however you want but I send it priority mail and insure the heck out of it. About 1/2 of them get stolen by Ukraine officials but the mail service pays you back multiple times it's value so you can try again.
I found the receipt. I didn't throw it away after all. I didn't know they can track it. The Post Office here told me they can determine by the Customs Number if the package ever left the US. I assume that's why they wanted what they called a receipt number.
3 lbs and 13 ounces of chocolates cost only $10. I thought it would have been foolish to insure it. Now, I know better. Insurance also covers postage. The $3-$4 insurance would have covered the chocolates and the $30 postage.
@Ralph. If I gave bad or inconsistent advice here, let me know here, on this thread. Do not go into another thread and say I gave bad advice because I would not know what you are talking about.r
fed ex charged me $90 for some documents to russia from usa. and then it took 2 weeks for
it to get there. but why buy cd`s in USA? i found cheap cd`s in ukraine, like $3 to $8
for music and dvd`s. of course the later is in pal format.
they have about any cd`s you can buy in UK over in ukraine. in america cd`s can be $20 each.
There are cheap cd's here to. They were mostly American sitcoms. They enjoyed one Get Smart cd. I sent them Gomer Pyle, Green Acres, Gilligan's Island and some movies from my collection that I didn't buy.
I don't know what pal format is, but a movie I bought over there does not work in one of my players and I was told the portable DVD player I bought over her does not play some of their movies there.
most any cd`s music or video you can buy in UK i found for sale in ukraine.
cd`s in ukraine are like $5 and in USA like $15
of course dvd`s in ukraine and Uk are in PAL format.
i blew like $90 i think for fed ex to send a pound or 2 of paper to russia and it took 2 weeks to get there.
Ukrainian Post Office - funny guys. They asked for a receipt number for the lost package. I gave it and they said it can't be that. It had too many digits.
I can imagine if it became a requirement for anyone to have a receipt or receipt number to pick up a package. You would have to fax or email that receipt. Those who don't have faxes or computers will have to mail the receipt in conjunction with the package.
Mr. Giss - Priority Mail. Good advice. US Postal service says 7-10 days on
Priority and First Class. This was the first time I used Priority and it took
11 days. First class packages take about three weeks.
