This is nothing unusual. Putin cut of the flow of natural gas to Ukraine during the orange revolution trying to manipulate the elections. I was there and it was pretty damn cold in Mariupol. I doubt that the financial crisis will influence women one way or another in Ukraine to go to agencys. This nothing new to them, they expect these things to happen. It was even more expected with the Yuschenko regime in charge since they are no friends to Russia.
All the idealistic Ukrainians who thought Yuschenko was going to change have found out different. Yuschenko who was Kuchma's banking minister should have a better grasp on the financial situation but doesn't. Though why would anyone with common sense think different. Kuchma's regime was about as corrupt as you get.
Similar situation in the states, Obama yes we can and change and it's the same old gang of corrupt officials that came out of the past democratic administration. Not much change there.
No the girls won't flood the agencys because on the world stage not much difference anywhere anymore. The will dance with the devil they know instead of the one they don't know.
The only thing western men will notice is an increase of Ukraine women joining agencies to get paid for writing letters to suckers. Only a very, very small percentage will leave their country for economical benefit ... but would your really want to marry a woman with that motive anyway.
Wake up and find yourself. Would you marry someone like yourself with YOUR motives? (i.e. "I live in a good country, so I should be able to bag a young beautiful desperate woman.")Not cool. On the other hand, if your motives happen to be pure, then you'd have to have a REAL hard-on for their culture to spend the $$, time, distance, and gamble with a woman you hardly know. Women are women, with slight variations here and there. Your trophy wife dreams will eventually come crashing down once she becomes acclimated to your country and eventually becomes westernized. (If you move to her country, then all bets are off of course)
A preemptive apology to those this does not apply to. Just felt like ranting and merely speaking rhetorically.
> The only way russia can get around it is to lay a pipe through the black sea but thats going to
> take years. Of course when Russia eventually lays this pipeline Ukraine will be stuffed.
actually just over 1 year in theory. i think they started construction back in 2006? anyway... it's meant to be operational in 2010. not that it's going to be cheaper to run than going via ukraine anyway, even with the higher prices ukraine is asking for.
and yes... we still have gas here in kyiv and the radiators are still too bl**dy hot!
Q: what is ukrainian for a thermostat?
A: a window
it really is! what else can you do! i'm not worried about freezing, i'm worried about dehydrating while i sleep!
today ukraine admitted to syphoning off gas... anyone shocked? i'm going to have to find something else to write about in my blog. my last 8 posts have been following the gas crisis! i'm starting to get a little bored of it now! lol
I think the reason the Ukrainians like to heat their appartment to 30+ C is that they have always got cheap gas from Russia.
Even now it is half the price that Europe pays.
Ukraine has large underground storage tanks filled 3 months supply of cheap gas subsidised by the russian tax payer.
Now they dont want to pay for this cheap gas and they stand on the boarder giving the fingers and showing their bums to the russians. :)
ukraine has offered $235 though with only an increase from $1.7 to $1.8 for transit, which is *still* very cheap (afaik). plus there is the fact that the price that europe pays will probably fall drastically soon anyway and countries that are able to negotiate long contracts with russia are able to get the price more like $250 anyway. so where the heck did russia come up with the figure of $418 from anyway? maybe this topic needs it's own thread! lol /pete
I don't believe they control the thermostats at their homes. I've been to Ukraine three times and I have never seen an individual gas unit. They do have electric heaters sometimes. What they have is a warm pipe going through the apartment. That seemed to be enough. I just talked to my girl in Kerch. She says it is cold. I asked her if it was because of the gas crisis, she said maybe. Their hot water heater is a joke. It is two feet by three feet. It has a pilot light that is on all the time. The only time the unit comes on is if when someone starts to use the "hot" water. Then, only a few seconds of hot water comes on. Taking a hot shower or even a warm one is impossible.
It all seems to be game playing. Ukraine has their own significant natural reserves of coal, oil and gas so there is no reason for Ukraine to ever be in the cold. The reason can only be the Ukrainian administrations incompetence or cant be bothered attitude.
Taking an extra 3 mths supply of gas and storing it is probably the reseason they cant aford to pay for it.
I dont think not paying their bills does Ukraine any good for their hopes of joining the EU.
Do we hear of Germany or Italy not paying their bills?
heating is supplied by a serial network of pipes carrying hot water. works bl**dy well (apart from all the heat lost along the way) but means you have no way of controlling it. if it is too hot then open a window! if it's too cold just plug in an electric heater.
of course as we taped up our windows yesterday (the ukrainian method of winterizing your windows), opening them when it is too hot is no longer an option!
Ukraine is so phucked up that whilst the utility companies are taking in the gas, electricity, water etc. it is, often, being not paid for, or being stolen, by the domestic users.
The gas heating, the radiator heating, is provided by the state and paid for, by the user, by a monthly charge. Should one or more individuals not pay for that heating it is simply impossible to disconnect the heating to one user without disconnecting to an entire apartment block or more.
The same for water, if they disconnect water it has to be disconnected for an entire apartment block.
And as for electricity, and I have seen this for myself, from the point where the cables enter the property, and before the meter, a 'illegal' socket is often installed whereas the user is stealing electricity. When the missus and I bought and began to renovate out apartment the builders found a cable, the downstairs neighbour had been stealing electricty from our apartment, that soon stopped!
No wonder the utility companies are in so much sh1t, they probably haven't got the revenue coming in to pay their suppliers, Ukrainian people might like to blame the government, or utility companies, but many of those same people are stealing, or not paying for, the supplies that may have led to this situation.
I really can not agree with those that write about looking for some poor village girl rather than a girl from Moscow. I guess it comes down to personal experience but of the dozen or so FSU women Ive dated/ had as girlfriends, the only ones I have had trouble with were the few that were poor. They seemed so consumed with looking for material advantage.
The more financially secure women know where they are in the world and are looking to build a more natural relationship.
Women move a lot more than you think. Out in the villages there is no work for women and so many move to the big cities to find work. It is much more likely that a village will have a shortage of women. So much for finding a woman there.
A place like St Pete is an excellent hunting ground to find a good woman.

Well summarised !!!!!!!
We are about to install a Gas meter into our apartment, its already has a water meter. Reason – if your apartment does not have meters, you pay the same as your neighbours. Actually, the cost is based on rooms/people living in it. So now, only our Mama is in the apartment, she will pay less as she will only pay for what she uses.
Ukraine has a large storage of gas – mainly from a huge slowdown in industrial usage and I imagine they were planning this façade of self political theatre showdown months ago. There is an Election pending – remember.
Yushchenko needs to have something to pull Tymoshenko popularity into line and discredit her with, he will blame her for this crisis.
They have enough gas in storage to see them through until mid April. So the citizens shouldn’t suffer yet ??? They will suffer in their pocket yet again, especially when Gazprom gets a sufficient pipeline around Ukraine. Ukraine will then pay world rates.
This façade is yet just ANOTHER game played by the political idiots to advantage their own personal gains.
There are going to be BIG protests in coming months.
Gazprom is a publicly listed company making a profit for its share holders. No other company in the world would have acted any different. They offered Ukraine a contract deal at rates close to Belarus’ rate. Belarus behaves in a more Russian friendly relation and promise than the Kiev Rada has the last 4 years, but because more than 50% of the Ukraine people still support Russia, Gazprom recognise this and will reward. Now - ????? maybe not.
Russia will now use this crisis to its benefit. To discredit (if they can discredit more than already) the political puppets and erode the Neocon influenced platform they were handed.
Kiev Rada is banking on the EU Gas consumers, coming to its rescue and paying and insisting Gazprom increase its supply fee to Ukraine for its gas line transiting through Ukraine. The EU wont like this and are getting a little pissed already with a drop off of gas pressure.
Ukraine does not understand the meaning of “a Contract”
As of 01/01/09 – Gazprom could not legally supply gas to Ukraine, because "NO contract"
In UK if I pay my utility bills promptly then i get a better price for gas and electricity, the best rates for gas and electricity are to estimate one's usage and pay X amount every month.
On the other hand someone I know, a single mother of 2 children on state benefits, fell in to serious arrears with her utility bills and they put her on a pay as one uses system, i.e. she has to but a card and prepay for her gas and electricity at a very expensive price and until the arrears may be paid off.
Sounds much the same as Belarus compared to Ykraine, if Belarus pay their bills on time they get a better price, on the other hand it seems Ukraine want the best price but they don't want to pay their bills.
Whilst there may be politics from Russia involved all Ukraine had to do was pay the bill to thwart the Russian government, it's not rocket science, Ukraine, by not paying the bill, have left themselves wide open.
If my gas or electricity became cut off then I would be on the phone to a supplier to the effect 'how can we sort this out?'.
Pete the Russians probably came up with the $418 after Bush put his 2 cents worth in.
Is there anyone in the world that is less likely to influence the Russians, in giving Ukraine a good deal, than George Bush?
Roll on the 20th, the world waits.
Adman you will be totally disappointed after the 20th. The world is waiting for something? Well it's not going to beam there. Unless you are to sellout to socialism and marxism. Sorry Obama is a one termer just like Mr. Carter. The cat is already out of the bag

Nas I agree if Obama ends up being like Carter we will be disappointed. The guy struggled too hard to make a decision.
But if he is anything like clinton the world will be very happy. Clinton wandered around my home town like a regular guy with virtually no security.
You might not like Clinton but the rest of the world thought he was great ( even with his obvious flaws)
I don't observe The 3 Musketeers, BMW Cooper, Gecko and the idiot Fredricko, complaining that individuals are bringing their discussions/disagreements regarding US politics to this forum, something that some of us, quote, 'fellow forum members' do not want to have to read about yet they are only too willing to complain regarding a discussion/disagreement regarding pilot licensing etc.
I am not, here, complaining of others and US politics, just making the point that The 3 Musketeers have a very selective way of what, and whom, they choose to complain about :)
Perhaps a special thread should be started 'Discuss your US politics here', where are you BMW Cooper and why haven't you done this already, you were quick enough to start the other special thread?
But Max Im surprised everyone doesnt love Clinton.
From what I understand Clinton handed the country over Bush with the economy in pretty good shape.
Bush is handing the country over to Obama in the worst shape for 80 years.
Putin blames Bush for the current economic mess the world is in.
Most would agree that Putin is a smart guy.
I will let Nas give the facts
Just make sure your Firewall is up and running - I can feel the heat coming down those fibre optic cables already :-))))))
PS
Dont mention Putin and Clinton in the same post - you will need a FULL set of armour for that !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
