myusername, he's working on something, though he is somewhat mentally challenged. He's busy sending strangers mytube videos who are then forwarding them to me so to think I'm am posting under numerous aliases.
My post was a tad sarcastic, but true, you are disqualified by mere intellect.
First off, all sites have scammers, but most have real women too. And some of the real women (available for meeting) are eager to be very expensively entertained by foreign guys, but others want a husband (and often, a father for her child/children). Also, I'm an old guy (50+) from USA, so I assume I'm a very attractive target for scammers.
lavaplace.com - A high percentage of real women. I've met several, all nice (no gold-diggers yet). About twice a week, I get a "kiss" (free expression of interest) from a scammer, whose profile will be deleted within a few days. I recommend looking skeptically at new profiles. Twice I have recognized photos of American celebs, contacted the site, and the profiles were immediately killed.
ukrainedate.com - A high percentage of real women, but lots of scammer activity. I get almost one free expression of interest per day, but I don't see most of them, because the profiles are deleted very quickly. I've met a few women from this site.
interdating.ua - I have not used this site, but I have used uarent.com (same outfit, I have been to their tiny office). When my apartment had no water at all for 2 days (try meeting women when you can't wash), and I finally bailed out to another flat, they not only charged me full rent for the 2 days with a waterless apartment, but charged me an extra day for cancellation. When I complained that this was robbery, they were very, very slippery and evasive, and never made compensation. I recommend steering clear. BTW, I have seen almost every flat on the uarent site listed on other apartment sites as well, sometimes at cheaper rates!
elenasmodels.com - More expensive than most, but really well run. The percentage of scammers seems to be very low, and they do their own policing (scammers are easy to recognize, so it is possible to quickly give them the boot, if the people administering the site pay attention). When they have met a woman and checked her documents, there is a check mark on her profile to indicate this. I've met several women from this site, mostly very good, but two of them enjoyed spending more about $100/hour of my money on the first meeting, which became the last meeting.
THOUGHTS ABOUT THE SITES
I'm the kind of guy who is much more attractive to scammers than to the women I want to meet... a little sad, but there it is. To anyone reading this site, with practice you can get pretty good at recognizing scammers. For men like me (50+, only average attractive), there is a HUGE difference between women you contact, and "women" who contact you. On ukrainedate.com, for every time a decent woman contacts me, I receive about 20 contacts from crooks. It's a little better on lavaplace.com, but not much.
This is NOT true for elenasmodels.com, at least partly because it's not free to send messages! Every contact I've received on that site has been legitimate, as far as I can tell.
A typical scammer contact shows age 27 or 28, and the picture (the profile usually has only one photo) is really glamorous, like it was lifted from a fashion magazine (hint right there!), shows her acceptable age range from 18 to 80 years old, and gives no real personal information.
The real women who have contacted me (remember, I'm not Brad Pitt) seem to fall into categories:
* just plain dowdy
* really attractive and interesting, but over my age limit (I hope to start a new family)
* young and glamorous, with truly suspicious motives
For men like me, I think the best bet is to contact the women you are interested in, and don't pay much attention to the women who contact you.
TRAVEL
A bunch of replies in this thread have been about Ukraine vs. other countries. There is a real difference!
Visa: I have gotten 6 Russian visas so far (about to apply again), and it is a serious expense and inconvenience. One of the worst parts is being without my passport during visa processing (which can take weeks, unless you want to pay a big premium), and therefore being unable to travel. It costs real money. In each city, I must either deal with registration, or plan to stay less than 3 business days so as to avoid registration. If you lose your visa (passport stolen), or overstay, the consequences are serious and nasty. If your passport is stolen, you ARE NOT ALLOWED TO LEAVE RUSSIA until you have not only your new passport, but also a new exit visa from Russia, which can take some time. Meanwhile, you may have missed your return flight, and need to find a place to stay without the required papers... For Ukraine, all I need is my air ticket!
Climate: Most Russian cities have longer and more severe winters than most Ukrainian cities. For northern cities, you may have a window of 8 or 10 weeks each year when the conditions are comfortable, and even in midsummer it can get cold. In Kyiv you can expect 8 or 9 months when the weather will be hot, mild, or moderately cold - only deep winter gets really tough.
Culture: From my limited experience, Ukraine is a bit friendlier (though there are plenty of great people all over the Russian-speaking world). Things are more orderly, better run, better maintained (yes, if you think Ukraine looks crazy, wait till you get to Russia!) Be very careful crossing the street in any of those cities, but Russian drivers seem much more aggressive than those in Ukraine. (Russian joke: When you cross the street, don't watch the traffic light, watch the cars. Nobody was killed yet by a light.) I don't have reliable numbers, but it seems to me that robbery and murder are even more of a problem in Russia than in Ukraine.
User Friendliness: I think that Kyiv is a little easier for a visitor who doesn't speak Russian. There are lots of people who speak English in any big Russian city, but i
User Friendliness: I think that Kyiv is a little easier for a visitor who doesn't speak Russian. There are lots of people who speak English in any big Russian city, but in Russia you are more likely to get into a situation where something is going wrong (at the airport, for example), and the people you need information from don't speak English.
Getting Around: Ukraine being relatively small, and having good transport systems, you can get from Kyiv (or your other international airport city) to other towns by plane, train, or bus -- pretty quickly, and economically. Russia is of course the world's biggest country. I just looked up a Moscow to Vladivostok flight -- the airfare was reasonable, but the plane has to stop twice to refuel (it covers 8 time zones)! Moscow and St. Petersburg are fairly cheap to reach, but as you spread out, travel can consume many dollars, as well as several days of your probably limited travel time.
TRAVEL AND WOMEN
All of my meetings in Ukraine have been in Kyiv. I didn't think about this until writing this reply today... but on the average, my contacts with Russian women have been much nicer than those with Ukrainian gals. Hmmmm....
Others in this thread wrote that Ukraine's easier access has made this international dating thing into more of an industry there. When I made my very first website meeting (with a very impressive gal -- lovely, dignified, perfect English), I told her that it was a first for me, and she answered that it was also for her -- she had corresponded with many Americans, but none of them had come to Russia.
Maybe the situation in Russia is more down-to-earth than I see in Kyiv. What do you guys think?
THE LANGUAGE THING
I've been self-studying Russian for almost 4 years now, the first year just dabbling, but more seriously during the last 3. I work on it almost every day. My Russian is still really limited, but usable in some practical situations. I've just started Russian-only correspondence with some gals who don't want to communicate in English.
I'd like to say that knowing some Russian has made me really popular with the ladies, but I don't see it. However, it does open possibilities that I wouldn't have otherwise. If I weren't learning Russian, I would have to limit myself to women whose English is really fluent (for me there is no point in trying to date someone with very limited communication).
How have you been studying Russian? Are you using a tutor or software or books or a combination of those?
I have been studying 6 months with a tutor. 2 months lazy and 4 months serious. When I first started my
teacher said 2 years. I thought that is too long! Now I believe it. Speaking and reading Russian is not
that hard but the grammar is crazy!
For dating ukraine girls the only phrase you need to learn is "nyet, eta sleeshkam doraga !" :-), well actually its a good opening for dealing with anyone where money is involved e.g. taxi drivers ...
New guy, 38, experienced traveller but not been to Russia or Ukraine. I didn't contact anyone yet - just trying to figure it out and not get burned too much, hence I appreciate this thread.
DATING SERVICE / MARRIAGE AGENCY
What is the difference between a dating service and marriage agency ?
Is it about jealously guarded contact details in the latter ?
FEES FOR LETTERS
Of course I don't like to pay for every letter sent/received.
Yet, someone wrote that some girls like the fact that guys must pay because it filters out time wasters.
Thoughts ?
SITES
Can anyone comment upon these two sites from Jim's White List :
foreignladies.com
ukrainesingles.com
I don't fear an easy to identify individual scammer. I fear what happened to Pika (another thread), insofar as trying to develop a relationship with someone, then physically visiting only to find that it's all just been about making money from letter exchange and additional services. We don't have the time to waste.
The thing is that yes there is a huge amount of good information on here BUT its like any field of human endeavour: YOU CANT BECOME AN EXPERT JUST BY READING ABOUT IT.
I would suggest just write to a few ladies on various sorts of sites, arrange to meet them and go and there and get some experience under your belt. Just don't spend too long writing, don't get too emotionally involved before a meeting, go there without too many expectations and see what happens. Try not to get fleeced too badly :-). Get a feel for how the women act and their culture.
The fact is that your odds of finding "the one" on your first trip are vanishingly small, and the single most important thing you can do to protect your heart, sanity and wallet is to accept that one fact and act accordingly.
Forget whatever Jim might say and start again, the guy gets paid by those agencies to recommend, he doesn't care if they are good or bad, all he cares about is money.
South Eastern part of the state but I grew up as a kid in Plymouth. So you are around Ft. Wayne, Columbia City, Warsaw?
As for the agency/dating service I wouldn't use them beyond the letter writing stages. Control your own destiny. Don't use a service that has a pay per letter charge. Establish personal contact early by phone and address. Even the ones that are legit and using agencys will be brain washed that they can't do this without the agencys help. When guys learn that agencys aren't their to help them they will be fine. Don't be coerced that you have to jump on the first plane to see them. Agencys are a business and their business model is very much the same. Just like scammers the MO is pretty much the same, though sometimes there is a variation on a theme.
Well on that foreignladies website there is no contact information whatsoever, the only means of communicating with them is via online messaging.
So auty Jim recommends that guys pay their money to an organisation that one will have no recourse against, just imagine claiming on one's credit card insurance, what's their address, phone number? Duh, I don't know, I just paid them my hard earned money!
Say's it all for Jim's recommendations really and have a read of this (omit any spaces that might be in the link):
I am in the Ukraine right now.Odessa.. I met with one of the 3 girls last night that I was sending letters to. She did look a little different than what her pictures were on the site but was good looking none the less. She met me at the airport with an interpreter that she had chosen...a friend.. we took a cab to the hotel I had already booked...a nice hotel in Odessa. We sat in the hotel for a few minutes and decided to go to dinner. She said many times that she was interested in me. At dinner in our conversations she reminded me that I agreed to pay for the taxi for here to meet me in Odessa from Nikolaev about 2 hours away. When I asked her what it cost for her to come here by taxi she told me $200.00.....tttt...ttwwwooo hhhhuunddred dddollars? "one way?" I asked. And she said "yes". So $400.00 was the total ticket for her to see me. I felt like the scam was on..The interpreter she hired also wanted $80.00 for her time? Im sitting in the hotel right now...cant sleep.Jet Lag...4 in the morning...I decided to look up what the average monthly income was in the Ukraine and its agound $300.00 a month. I dont know alot...about alot...but right now Im feeling pretty scammed...I mean.. what was I going to say..NO? I leave tomorrow to see another girl in Simferopl. She has already lined up an apartment for me...UUHH OO... I swear...if I smell anything that even resembles a scam...Im running!!! I guess....maybe not all the women on RW Globe are scammers..but so far Im not felling at all lucky...So after I payed for the dinner we came back to the Hotel for a few minutes..When it was time for her to leave I went to give her a peck on the cheek..she looked at me like I was the one doing the scam? Not a very good experience...The funny thing is..she wants to see me again when I get bak on Friday. hehehehahaha
