Why would I want to "dress for success" while traveling in FSU?
I'm like Popeye, "I yam what I yam."
Living in Switzerland I wore exactly what I would wear in the US and yes I was known
as the American with 4 daughters but I was liked for who I was not some pimped out version of a Euro.
thank you texas dude -- no shit I was thinking the same thing and I said it out loud yesterday No bullshit here... "I am like Popeye, I yam what I yam" I kid you not!!! that is too funny - or scary. this is 100% true. as I mentioned earlier, I don't want to present myself in some light and then for her to find out later I am different. My thoughts are if she doesn't like me because I don't dress like everyone else, then TFB. But I am taking my my black pants anyway. I dress for success here as well. I have all the bases covered. I plan to go on a hike while I'm there and spend time not just on the asphalt or cement.
None of you folks no squat about me. If they dropped the big one on us I could survive in the wilderness indefinitely. Yet I also pretty up for the symphony often. I am a gourmet cook. And I could give a rats ass if some lady is smug to me because of how I dress. If that is all that matters to them then I am in the wrong hunting ground.
But still I don't want to come across as arrogant or unappreciative to them (her).
Laid - I would say lean more western. But don't look like your typical fat balding American white tennis shoe, match faded jean jacket and jeans. Smart casual works well if you are in the 30 something range. American jeans are definitely different then what you can find here. i like the ones here better, and they cost much less, but a Ukrainian woman can spot western jeans in a heartbeat and seems to like them.
Married - I would say dress like the locals, and I am not going to explain what that means until you see them for yourself, and then go down to the market and buy what they have to choose from. If you want a lifetime with someone maybe attracting them with your wallet and fancy dress are not the best options, but then again, if you are looking for much more than fun in Kiev you might as well dress like the guy above who is looking to get laid since they are very fashion forward here, you don't want to look like too much of a slouch.
And if you really want to get married, step outside of Kiev for a few days and find yourself a nice traditional family to take you in for a few days. You'd probably be very surprised at the quality of the small town women put into making their homes, lovely ones.
Makes me laugh that one, or more, believe that all the roads are constructed of asphalt or concrete, indeed that some roads are constructed at all and those that are constructed need a navigator to get around the potholes!
gecko, I'm not stupid --- or it could be questioned why I am even doing this. I have no intention of showing up in my saturday shorts and t-shirt. I'm not going there to do yard work. I wouldn't dress like that for a woman here. Christ! Yet I plan to spend time off "asphalt and cement"
SM, how ya doin? It is an expression. Has no real reference to the streets, sidewalks or the roads of Ukraine. It means a lady has invited me to spend time not just hanging out in the city but going for a hike in the "country"
Style type jeans will be good everyday. Stay away from Levi's or plain looking jeans. Dress pants and sport or suit coat are only needed for the Opera. I do pack one pair of black pants for certain night clubs and a few nice button long sleeve club shirts to go with. If you body is fit then form fitting t-shirts or other pullover shirts with no collar are very attractive to the ladies. Black shoes or boots with no laces are a must. In Europe the pointed toe is the norm but you won't find them in the USA so go with your favorite and it will be good enough. Never ever wear sneakers or tennis shoes or what ever you want to call them. You can wear shoes like Sketchers sport for casual wear. I notice the men are starting to wear that stuff now too. Never wear shorts. Like the guys above said even during the hot days. I have never wore a suit in Ukraine. Not Ever! Its ok to be different with the clothes you wear but just make sure they are new or newer looking.
If one is going to dress other than how they normally dress then they are a 'fake', they are putting on a pretence that they will either need to maintain for the rest of their life or will fall flat on it's face as soon as they revert back to dressing 'normally'.
The best advice is to be one's self and if a lady may not approve it then best to find out sooner rather than later, we all stand out in FSU, the locals know that we are foreigners, so something we may or may not wear isn't going to make a blind bit of difference.
one thing about the girls there, most will tell you your clothes are crap if you ask, they have i kind of nice honesty about this and have there own ideas what looks nice, its just Ukraine or Russia..
take only two pairs of jeans and shirts,, yeah newer or new..
go shopping and buy your other clothes there, its great clothes shopping there.
even better get her to help
When i was there recently. I dressed as i would normaly dress. I am not sure if a woman is impressed by how you dress over there. The important thing is if this girl thinks anything of you how you dress is not of vital importance. I could not tell you if a girl could tell you if you were wearing italian shoes and designer shirts i doubt she will be wearing designer clothes but they do dress well. I would say dress how you want and if you stand out so what.
I haven't opened Elena's book "How to Find an Marry a Girl Like Me" since before I first went to Ukraine over a year ago. I found it and opened it last night. I dressed exactly how she said not to in order not to stand out. There was even a man pictured with the checkered flannel shirt I wore. Fashion is not my thing.
its gotten you to a russian dating forum. thats where.
for most people, just being yourself is how your mommy raised you.
it takes a man to admit that he could use a little improving.
everybody knows that russian girls dress nice, or at least try to. they wear makeup. high heels. they put on 'pretenses'. thats the culture.
so if your not the type to take care of himself, 'put on pretenses', then save your money and go to the phillipines or some other place that lacks culture.
i'm not putting anybody down. this is my honest advice.
making a good impression when you go out, even just to pop to the shop is *always* important here (i'm just not quite sure why!)
i haven't quite brought myself to buy any pointy shoes yet and heck i've been here in kiev for just over 6 months. for me it was warm insulated boots for the winter and smart black shoes now and olya is always going on about how i don't clean/polish them enough.
smart blue jeans seem to be the norm here, older guys seem to wear smart dark trousers and shirts but i tend to normally just wear (smart) t-shirts. it's like we both have 2 sets of clothes, 1 for at home and 1 for going out!
wear clothes that are dark and smart and you can't really go too wrong. i always shorts at home but would never dream of wearing them outside.
and in these economic times you will more than likely get asked for some money from someone at somepoint once people realise you're english or american. it's even surprised olya a few times when i/we have been asked for a few grivna's...
