Sumy is less expensive than other city's but it has all the things we need. Its a good city. decent nightlife, lots of things to do and I havent met a scammer. My 20 year old girlfriend is from Nikolaev and there is nothing wrong with her. She hasnt tried anything untoward at all. Didnt meet her at an agency, just by chance on the street and struck up a conversation and before you know it we are dating. Im not gonna bash a guy for taking dancing lessons. In Kherson there are alot of eligible girls at the dancing school. We often go to Nikolaev to do stuff because its only 45 minutes away although we have good clubs in Kherson. There is a new apartment building being built and prices are very good. I wouldnt mind a 3 room apartment here as they are also about 25k raw but in my village I bought an unfinished house for 8k and hope to have it finished in a year or so. realistically, a US expat can live here for $1000/mo ssi and live very well. And if they do so what? They just show their pass and they're allowed in. If the girl stays over then it's the double occupancy rate but it's not much more in most cases. I can get a 4* hotel with wifi and breakfast for about $25 or less in most cities of Ukraine. With an apartment you can get noisy / nosey neighbours who wonder what a foreigner is doing there. Also I remember with apartments sometimes you have to climb a lot of stairs or go up in some dingy barely working elevator. Most guys here ARE using websites and agencies,,, and can’t find an honest girl in all of Nikolaev. I’ve probably received more letters from Nikolaev, than any other city. It’s the number of obvious scammers that makes that city special. The hassle of hotels?? Like dragging your groceries there, doing your laundry, using the ATM, finding a translator,,,, having a drink in the bar. “hassles of a hotel when you have a "guest"“ You do know the reason for that hassle?? LR - the hotels I've been staying at recently in Ukraine, when my girl comes in she just walks past the reception and with me. They don't ask her any questions or anything because she's with me. They also have video surveillance to deal with what you're talking about. The only time I was hassled was in Russia and this was only because the hotel was greedy and wanted to rent two rooms but I dealt with them. By the way the benefit of booking with a site like Booking.com is that the hotel treats you like gold as they want you to write a good review and not a bad one. I stayed at the Muscat in Herson,,,, maybe a 3 star but cozy! I only found one other hotel online there,,,, and it was more like condo units, don't remember the name. Odesa might have some 4 stars,,, perhaps The London Hotel,,, and one that has a row of flags out front, from countries all over the world. I'd stay at the London just for a treat. I consider a 4* to be a hotel with new furniture, modern appliances, modern or renovated building, all the amenities, room service available, English speaking staff, etc. A 3* would be more basic with self serve options. A 2* might be some dump with no good plumbing, heating, etc. A Soviet era style hotel and I've stayed in plenty of those. I remember one of them I stayed at and it was so fucking cold. It reminded me of the song Moonlight And Vodka - CHRIS DE BURGH. Oh yeah I remember on one of my first visits to Moscow, I stayed at the Izmailova Hotel and the room was so cold. The reception suggested I stay in a room on the other side of the building where the room would get less draft. You think it is good deal to get small box for $25 per night??? you cannot bring groceries to hotel because you cannot cook there. how can you do laundry because I have never seen hotel room with washing machine. Translator???? really????? ATM are located everywhere. You will pay fees for hotel to use ATM in hotel on top of your bank fees and exchange fee. Bank AVAL and Privat bank charge no fees at all. I have never experienced this in 20 years I agree with Armin. Not the apartment itself. I've stayed in many beautiful renovated apartments in Ukraine, yet the building itself was in a decrepit condition. Noisy neighbours? I've heard everything from babies crying, children thumping the floor above, neighbours in heated arguments, even the screams of rape. Some hotels now offer kitchenettes where you can do your cooking. I can tell you haven't stayed in a hotel in a while. You're living in the past somewhere. Hotels in Ukraine now are modern, up to date and offer all the modern conveniences. Also when you check into an apartment, often you have to check into an office where the apartment is not located which is an added inconvenience if you have baggage. I am not knocking apartments. I use both hotels and apartments depending on the situation. No, no I havent stayed at a hotel in a while but I know nice one exist but im not into paying the double price compared to the apartment in the building next door to the hotel. all these noises you describe, where the hell are you staying????? always use the Russian/Ukrainian language website because the English language one always seem to be higher.. I know great people who have high standard/VIP class apartments in Nikolaev, Kherson, Odesa and Kiev. As a hotelier I can tell you that the difference between a 3 star and a 4 star might be H24 room service and the difference between a 4 star and a 5 star might be that the twat behind the bar wears a bow tie whilst addressing one as "sir" and one's burger costs $15 rather than $10. I find Booking.com works best (after you register there.) But even better, after you've stayed at a property, establish a relationship with the management or owner. Get their personal email. Then on your upcoming stays you can negotiate even better rates than those published on the 'net.
