From my experience:
The first thing in learning languages is to get used to hearing its “music”. I’ve got this advice from my Spanish teacher. She told us to listen to Spanish speaking radio station and even not to try to understand it. Just listen. The understanding comes later. I’m very comfortable with my Spanish/Portuguese/ French-speaking in-laws (Russian or English are not present as they live in Montreal and don't need them). My grammar stinks but I’m capable to express myself and know the subject of conversation. Listen, learn, and speak.
As for understanding Russian women (as you realize it has nothing to do with language) I’d say the author of “Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus” put the words to common women’s reactions. I’ve got some use of it myself.
If you're going to have a daily read then MAFM&WAFV is one I would recommend not just to learn but to participate and add variety (if you didn't have it already)
Anyone wishing to try before you buy. here is the ed2k link for Pimsleur Russian I, for emule or Donkey. not tryed it myself yet.
All the others are out there if you cant find them mail me and i shall help.

I agree with you mate, they showed a similar show on UK Tv over about 6 episodes last year, and it wasa similar two "drongos" as Man calls them :o)) that they used !!
IN the same program there were 2 guys doing the Thai search as well, and one of those two was a total "merchant banker" !!!
These programs do nothing to help us serious people comvince our families and friends that we are embarking on a good quest, and the we are not "drongos" too !!!
Cinders:
I agree completely with you, I have listened to hours of Russian radio and really enjoyed it, as time passes I begin to understand more and more of hwat I hear, and watching TV too is a useful way to listen. I love watching Okna when Im in Russia, not for the show content, but for the fact its just talking and I am now beggining to follow the stories a lot of the time, even though I do realise its not very genuine, its still a great way to get deeper into the language.
While there I try too to watch western films that I have already seen in English, these are of course dubbed but it again helps to match what you know is being said with the Russian words that have been dubbed in.
Many times I have spotted wrong translations when I know that the person has said one word but the Russian voice has put in a totally wrong replacement :o))
Welcome back Cinders by the way, I havnt seen much of you since I got back from Russia last week :o))
And welcome back SG too :o)
Where you been hiding mate ? ;o))
Regarding being in Afghanistan or Iraq I am afraid it was a necessary evil. As much of a pacifist as I am by nature and theology, I am afraid that the whole world is going to have to eventually confront the problem of terrorism and its sources head on. Here in my circles we aplaud Blair for his courage. I think when all is said and done that he and Bush will be seenn to hvae had great foresight and will be remembered much as we remember Reagan and his role in the whole cold war thing.
Tim. I feel bad for Jet. How long is he supposed to be there? It sounds like he has spent some time with the other girl, and is not real impressed with her either. You suppose they kind of led him on before he left, or mayb he just did not have a good read on them.
Hope he can turn it around - or is able follow your suggestion.
So do I feel bad for Jet mate, I have had 3 emails from him in the past hour, so I know a lot more than he is saying here (and obviously I wil repsect that confidentiality) but things are a lot worse it would appear than he has saiud in open forum :o(((
I just wish there was something, anything, I could do to help apart from just be here to answer and support by email :o///
The best software I have seen to learn Russian so far is Rosetta Stone. They have CD courses that you can purchase online from Amazon or almost any other bookseller. If you don't want to invest in the CD-ROM's they also have a web based subscription model. When I looked at it before they offered a free 15 day evaluation of their web based program.

Prices were about $19/mo US for the web version which is basically identical to the courses on CD-ROM. The ones on CD-ROM are just the website copied to CD. Both offer the same features and benefits. The CD-ROM course can be anywhere from $150-$250 depending on which one you purchase. So for starters the web subscription may be better for you if you have a decent internet connection and don't want to invest some money into a full course.
The strong points of this software is how it works. They software company did a lot of research to see how children learn languages at a very, very early age and incorporated that same method into their courses. So the results are that you learn words by association both visually and verbally. From the parts of the course that I did I can tell you that memory retention is much higher than traditional language courses. Though you do lack some later on when dealing with word orders, grammer rules and more complex phrases.
They also have a special feature where you can hook up a microphone to your PC. You can then pronounce the words during the software course and it does a computer voice print match to help you see if you are pronouncing the words correctly on your screen in real time.
Overall great software to learn the basics of the language or take a crash course for a visit or as defense to learn what your girl is really saying about you to family and friends. ;-)
Regardless of all these Cd`s, tapes, books and whatever, there is no substitute for the real thing :o))
The best way to learn is to get yourself over there and immerse yourself in the language at first hand, its amazing how much you will pick up in just a few days if you make the effort to try :o))
I do agree with you Tim however at the moment i could not even say hello in russian and feel i realy need to make some effort before i go. or even before i make my next phone call...lol
these girls have such good english,
Anyway my apogies for my absence, major puter problems.. had to reformat and have lost all my e-mail addresses and e-mails.. s**t..
Of course you must make some effort before you go mate, dont take me wrong, I wasnt knocking anyone, but until you go there and actually hear and speak it, these learning aids are not all they are cracked up to be :o)) That was all I was getting at :o)))
At least you are trying mate, unlike someone on another post who thinks that a Russian girl is going to drop in his lap just because he is too lazy to go to her !!!
As we are talking about learning language, I just wanted to mention about the girls learning english and this is the only thread that had anything to do with it. I rang my loverly yeaterday and she had a english level of one on her details. I asked her about it and she said that her english was very very poor so she went to her friends place the help her trans late. I rang her friends house and after some time she got on the phone so we could hear each others voices and next thing I know she was talking to me in english. I asked her basic quetions and of we went. Does this rating system posted just ask the girls how good they think they are. In my experience most young woman in Russia had basic english skills so if I was in shop, I usually looked for the youngest girl and asked her for what I wanted. Has anyone else fond this 1-10 rating system on the site to be inacuate. Has anyone else been surprised as I have, Andby the way, learning Russian is an exelent ideaas most girls have asked me if I know Russian an expressed disapointment at my answer, but never changed there attitude towards me.
