Sorry about that slip of the tounge, Ptichka. A very close girlfriend of mine was first generation Canadian from Ukraine. So I am well aware of the difference between Russia and Ukraine. Her family was still in fear of even returning even for a visit to their homeland, due to the circumstances of their departure, when I knew them.
Pitchka I knew you were a lady of good taste. Cognac is the way to go!! As far as the vodka goes, my doctor here in the states said the best to drink was vodka, because of it's natural ingredients and the bodys ability to break it down, he said gin was the worse. He also said moderation in anything is ok, over use of even vodka is bad for your health. First alcohol I ever got drunk on was vodka, I haven't had a taste for it since. I don't drink much anymore since I've battle
with losing wieght after the age of 40, now that I've lost a lot I haven't had the desire to drink, but at Christmas time I will go buy a
good bottle of Cognac or Napolean brandy and get the warm buzz it delivers. I love beer but I stay away from it because I do love it!!
Due to the massive costs projected to burden each of the 25 states who lead the nation in teen and unwed pregnancies, the US Surgeon General is spearheading a campaign in Congress to modify the current 'Warning Labels' on alcoholic beverages sold in the country.
The proposed label warnings would change from the current:
"WOMEN SHOULD NOT DRINK ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES DURING PREGNANCY BECAUSE OF THE RISK OF BIRTH DEFECTS" to a more preventative oriented message such as: "COMSUMPTION OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES MAY LEAD TO PREGNANCY FOR WOMEN, UNWANTED PATERNITIES FOR MEN AND A LIFETIME OF MISERY FOR THE POOR KIDS BORN TO PARENTS TOO STUPID TO MAKE SUCH LIFE CHANGING DECISIONS"
Getting back to the original topic here, I'm still thinking of what to bring for gifts. So far all I have read is Booze, knife, History of the Golden Gate Bridge. Also not to bring t-shirts and chewing gum. Any other ideas? I was thinking about bringing something that has to do with my state, but all I can think of is those stupid salt and pepper shakers that says "welcome to Ohio"
more idea's--- a good pair of black leather gloves, a nice silk scarf or an assortment of perfumes or if you want to be a nice guy, a nice pair of ear rings anything in real gold or silver. =)
Black leather gloves...not too good. Only if they are warm enough to use during our winters:)
Ear rings...depends on a person, personally I can't wear gold ear rings, then I have problems with ears, I can wear only silver ear rings...but how can you know that???:)
I offered another idea, which it seams nobody saw, some decorations for the house, like a small vase, or a small pictures, or something like that. What do you think???
Dale, lol....
In your particular case (OH residency), I'd do everything I could to deflect attention to other states, lol....DO bring the books about the golden Gate Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, the Florida Keys and the Oregon Coast....anything to keep her from asking questions about Cleveland, lol...!!!!
Comment on earrings - a fairly big surprise, for me anyway.
In the US EVERY woman has pierced ears - and often a few more piercings as well. Common, are pierced navals, pierced noses, and multiple piercings around the ears. I've seen pierced tongues, pierced lower lips and pierced... unmentionables (i'm trying to be polite). But AT LEAST pierced ears - I've seen little girls as young as TWO with them.
Neither of my Moldovan girls had pierced ears - or any desire to get them pierced. These ultrafashion conscious women - it was the one biggest surprise I found.
And I seem to find a lot of Russian women who have some sort of allergic reaction to gold. Less expensive for us - anyway.
When I went to St. Petersburg, I spent some time with my girlfriends son, age 8, and her cousin age 13. I gave these boys some American coins that I had in my pocket, and one dollar bills. They were excited about having a collection of foreign coins and currency. Then I thought about when I was a kid, and how much I enjoyed getting coins from different countries that my family members have been to.
its the thought of the gift that really matters not what the gift is. just dont go over board and buy everyone 2 or 3 gifts because then you will look like you are trying to bribe them, and that would make you look like a man who is unsure of his abilities as a man. also the more personal the gift is to you the better. I just bought a book about Russian women, it was written by a Russian woman who married an American, she seems to really know her stuff, Its contains alot of good information that I never would have thought of, anyway the book is where I got the idea for nice leather gloves and ear rings, perfume ect.. the lady said those gifts are a good substitute gift if you dont want to give something personal. anyway I thought it was a good idea =)
Jet here you also may see young girls who have many pierced parts of their bodies...but that's not a common thing at all!!!:)
"And I seem to find a lot of Russian women who have some sort of allergic reaction to gold. Less expensive for us - anyway." and my mom and several other friends can't wear silver or bijouterie, they can wear only gold in order not to have any problems with the ears...it all depends!!:)
No, at least I never heard about such earrings...maybe they do sell them, but they may cost rather highly. And you know many people don't believe in these signs "hypo-allergic"...so I'm not sure about that.
Most jewelry isn't 24 carat (pure gold is a very weak material) so that russian and ukrainian women are allergic to it might have something to do whit what other materials are used (nickle gives often a allergic reaction). Most infections/allergic reactions i have heard of are because people pearced themself or friends.
Ron I know that being pearced by a person himself or a friend was very popular in the past, but I know that my mom got her ears pearced in the hydropathic establishment, and she took me there too. Many girls go to the hairdressing saloons...so it's not a problem that much now.
