in precisely 9 minutes you post 3 posts which, apart from saying you disagree, aren't too friendly either, part of it even a bit outdated if not misinformed.
So you think your US is the greatest aid-giver eh? Really? I've got news for you: Mozambique gave $100.000,- !!
You're laughing now I suppose? Maybe I should wait with going to bed until you rattle out another 20 posts on this, but just maybe you should do some homework first. Per capita, or per annual income pp/py or whatever, they probably have given a LOT more than what the rich West has given. Keep in mind there are hardly taxes or facilities there, very unlike your payslip and situation. Your government simply is obliged to fork out substantial sums to the world. Oh, and don't forget the kickbacks, make no mistake here, if it were only to get world-wide recognition for doing this. Sure, the world also makes money from the US, but isn't that the pro, or con, of being a super-power? Give & take, the balance is in the middle.
In absolute figures you're undoubtedly correct, but keep in mind that their/your funding comes from the largest western nation earning damn well, making it - as per statistics - maybe not such a generous sum, who will know?
Europe still is not as united as your states are, they probably never will be hence their individual contributions will pale in comparison to that one of the united state's. Just a thought, ponder it if you like, I'm going to bed.
Before I do - No, haven't seen that sign. Pity, I like clever sarcasm. But somebody simply will have to try harder, because if not we might see stockbrokers jumping out of scyscrapers again. You see Shag, that is definitely a con of being a super-power - your currency's deflation is affecting a large part of the world, even if you yourself might not notice anything of that hence my Q. You might not like the A from some fellow countryman but maybe you should consider the fact that I, a foreigner for you, have my own opinion.
Wtrav, French food is supposed to be all about class. Huge plates with loads of exquisite garnish quite effectively hiding the actual foods, but make no mistake - all those courses do fill one up, at least those not having a trained supersized stomach.
And Toad, serve this kind at home, and when you do add some 'mistique du chef' (Come on, I KNOW you can act!). Cherish her cheap wine in your cellar 'for a better moment' (gathering dust here takes on a new meaning), open up one for 'special occasions' (with a cork :), and I bet your dessert is magnifique. Hey, if I prep for hours I want to see the end of it as well, but that's just me I suppose ;-)
In absolute figures Japan has given $260,000,000.........mere peanuts really!!!!
But surely the moot point is who gives a sh*t WHO gives the most or the least.....those people need everything they can get right now......the thing that really stinks is the flag waving going on here. The forum doesn't need it........take it somewhere else....PLEASE!!!!
Shaggy, first of all sorry to hear about your medical condition, don't misinterpret my words, I meant not offense to people in your condition. I can only admire you for having the iron will required to lose 100 lbs, it seems unbelievable. You'll make a great spouse to your Russian lady. Regarding moving to Canada, although I greatly appreciate the country of Canada especially the area around Montreal and Quebec City, I don't like extreme cold wintry conditions, so I am staying with my nice memories from my visits to our northerly neighbors and are not planning any permanent relocation. However, I am relocating to Europe soon on a business proposition nothing to do with political conservatives having been re-elected here :) it was planned well prior to the election. I will be coming back to the states from time to time. Aside from this, my wife and I are finding lifestyle in Europe to fit better with the way we want to live and raise our kids, we'll see how it goes. My sister is just finishing a two-year assignment in Rome with a large American pharmaceutical and she really liked it there, she's supposed to come back but she may even try to extend her stay in Europe or make it permanent if possible (she speaks six languages, so languages is not a problem). For me, mainly I am tired with the "live to work mentality" and want to try some "work to live" for a while. My wife will also be much closer to her parents and apparently it is easier to invite them to visit with us than it is to the states. We already got a Schengen visa and are preparing the necessary papers for her permanent visa once we are there. Aside form my American citizenship, I have European passport as well, so that makes things easier. We're spending time the last two to three months teaching each other languages. I teach her Greek, she teaches me Russian. I have made significant progress in learning Russian, which surprisingly I am finding not too difficult to learn at a conversational level, it's a very rich, beautiful language. Of course no offense to our country meant shaggy, wherever I will be the USA will be in my heart, just strongly disagree with the current course. Be sure I will also visit the closest American embassy and cast my vote prior to Election Day wherever I am, so you should not discount my ballot from the total next time ::))
TD, why say Europe will never be as united as the states, I am certain it will. America got to where it is today after more than 200 years of evolution after the revolution. The progress towards economic and political unification in Europe in such a short time after WWII has just been amazing.
America WILL give at least 2 billion dollars to the tsunami relief effort. And pay the bulk of Iraqi restoration simultaneously. This is why we pay dearly in tax dollars. This country started rebuilding Europe even before MacArthur implemented the Marshall Plan in Japan, during WW2. We gave relief to Dresden after we bombed what has been reported as 100,000 to 600,000 people. Every country we have "Westernized" has become an industrial giant.Even the American military presence in such countries as Khirgyzstan has greatly bolstered lagging economies. I do not agree with the policies of this country, but I will say what has been said before--We are still the number one country in the world for immigrants. Our borders are rife with patrol officers who try to keep the gate closed--unsuccessfully. What people from other countries simply do not understand is that this incredible melting pot is the cultural, societal center of the world. Our ethnic diversity cannot be compared to any country. You want French food here? You got it. Cantonese or Thai? No problem. Borsch? It is here too. I know a good place to eat pelmeni where the bliny is better than pancakes from the IHOP. We celebrate Oktoberfest, Orthodox Christmas ( Lent),and Los Dias De Los Muertes too. Our diversity is our strength--not our numbers. How many Iraqi/Americans are fighting in their ancestral homeland as Marines? Hawaii is basically Japanese. California, Arizona, and New Mexico are haven to Mexicans. Incredible numbers of Cubans live in Miami. Asians love the west coast. We have huge communities of people from every corner of the globe. We even have racially, politically, and religiously motivated communties ( or zealots) such as the Freemen and the Hutterites who somehow survive despite massive criticism and intolerance. I have a German last name which was abbreviated in the early part of the century because of the bad rep the kaiser got. Germans ( and Scandinavians)dominate the Great Lakes states, North Dakota, and Iowa too. I know an English businessman who used to complain that he was owned by the Queen. He now makes the big bucks selling and installing shit pumps for dairymen. Something must be right here,or else the population would be in decline, like so many eastern countries- Ukraine for example. Love it,leave it, or live with it. My heart goes out to all
the world, and I wish we could/would all be as brothers--and maybe a little more emotionally mature, and less given to nasty downgrading and defilement. I welcome and appreciate all your differences! This might be hog heaven, but God bless the USA!!! Yes,we are outsourcing and off-shoring many jobs. But we are also insourcing. For every corporation that takes the fall, many independent small contractors like myself with a smattering of computer savvy find that we can compete against a mega monopolist that previously owned the market. Global trade and purchasing also opens the door to lower costs for the entrepreneur. Many businesses have been crushed by simply not having stronger alliances with a broader marketplace. I am sympathetic to so many people who have lost jobs to India, but this also creates a market for management, teaching, and job placement workers. And for every US buck that goes out--1.30 comes back. The executive to worker wage ratio is out of control here in the US--but in India it is almost 4000 to 1 instead of the 350 to 1 in America. Another point to consider is that India will lose contracts to Russia. And if this helps to diffuse the Boris Berezhovskys of Russia,or the other 11 mafia hooligans men who control 90% of the GNP,then I am all for it,and anythng else which will strengthen the individuals of these countries. Jimmy Carter once said that a rich man has a moral obligation to his poor brothers. And so does the US. We are the big brother to the world, and the champion of the underdog cause, even if our politicians can be blamed for mistaken idealism and faulty planning.
Shagg,
It's hard for me to feel compassion for fat people who day after day continue to ignore every single warning from every damn doctor or health authority in the country telling them EAT LESS, EAT HEALTHIER, EXERCISE MORE.
My compassion will not help anyone avoid obesity and the long string of killing diseases it causes.
Okay,okay--I am not trying to bore you all with my psycho-pseudo intellectualisms, just one more thing for Shaggy. You are correct in your statement about addiction. Most children learn from their parents-some do not even have a choice,as is found in babies who are born of alcoholic parents. SMoking, and coffee are the largest addictions--the gateway it has been called. But these are learned addictions. Ones that a grown person can reverse. I lived farmstyle(homespun) as a kid,and we were expected to eat everything on our plates, and were punished for waste if we did not. A typical example of breakfast: bacon, eggs, hashed browns, toast and jelly, hot cream of wheat cereal ( northern grits ;o) ) orange juice and milk. Sometimes pancakes on top of this. I was a fat little fella, weighed almost 200 pounds by the time I was 14--kids called me Fathead and Lardass. This was on top of the other racial slurs--prairie nigger from the white kids, and honky or wasichu or monkeyface from the brown people of my family. I do not disrespect your opinion,or want to. But it is the farmer who feeds the pig,or else the pig would look like a greyhound. I love my chubby daughter, but I do not want her to have rheumy knees,or congestive heart failure,or stretch marks on her belly. My heart will break to see her suffer from a hunger pang, but I know from experience that once you go through this "withdrawal",your stomach is actually contracting like a balloon with the air slowly coming out. And after just a few days, even Fat ALbert will not be able to eat 3 plates of food at the all you can eat buffet. I feel incredible pain to hear my overweight older brother panting when he ties his shoes. Or running out of breath when we walk short distances. Years and years of hard drinking have killed my breakfast urge forever. I start each day now with an herbal supplement which contains golden molasses, eleuthero root, leaves and stems, buckthorn root, rhodiola, cinnamon rose root, japanese aralia, schisandra seed, and chinese licorice root. It tastes like prune juice. And when I get hungry about 10 A.M., I drink water,as much as I can stand. I do not have the gamut on sensibility or wisdom, and I relish this place for its chatter. So bring it on,I will not close my eyes or my mind John Redcorn ( Blaine)
spirit:
not boring and eloquently put,the way out of any dilemma is to tackle it head on as you seem to have done.I think everyone can agree that the decision what and when to feed your children can be a difficult one at times but when the head takes over from the heart, things invariably improve.
I can only agree with your post and your honesty......thank you!
Thunder you are sadly mis informed. The is the number one provider of aid to the world and yes we even borrow money to continue to do so. Please show me some facts that would prove your point. Please remember to include all of our aid from military policing of the world to our private donation that you will see again the US will provide many times over the aid of any other country. Again Please find one year in the last 50 that any other country has done more for the needs of the world. I bet you can't. Sorry for my multiple post as I felt it was more clear to face the issues individually. Damn strait I will debate anyone who intentionally provides bogus information. Some here think that there left half truths will make some great difference in there little fantasy world but the simple truth is if you must use a natural disaster and use it to push a political agenda is simply sick. If you are going to make people listen to your misinformation at least state where you get it. It shows itself again that the world simple refuses to realize that the media will only give the story that sells not that is the truth as it is uneventful and boring. Again I will bet you that history will prove that we spend more and provide aid to the world than any other country and for you to try to belittle or wrongly claim otherwise is criminal.
Shaggy, 24-25% of our government's budget is classified as help to other nations. However, check this out, the non-military part of this help is less than .25%. The data was displayed on Reuter's during last weekend. Military help is very much tied to overseas interests of the United States such as policing, supporting friendly governments against internal rebels, even CIA activities are classified as military help to other nations, wars in the middle east, selling junk aircraft to poor nations at wholesale, etc. The bottom line is that our generocity extends only to where our inetersts lie and only if there are geopolitical benefits that greatly overcome the expense (such as protecting oil rich nations, etc.). We would live an illusion if we believed otherwise.
Shaggy:
whilst I realise you feel very strongly about the aid provided by the US,ostensibly this forum is NOT for political debate or flag waving,it IS about dating and finding a future partner from the FSU and providing information to that end.
I know that a broad range of topics are covered here(including political ones)and where there is genuine reason to deabte them (IE relating to the FSU) then that is welcome.
The internet is littered with 1000's of notice boards and discussion groups that ARE concerned with how much aid everyone gives.Please......please.....please take the debate there. This is simply not the place for it OK?
Wtrav2,
No illusion here...only complete support when our government is willing and able to help friends, not foes.
Every single country that isable to help in catastrophic international events does so with an agenda of reciprocity of some form. No exceptions.
Shaggy:
the point was not about deciding what we read or respond to.....my point was that this stuff does not belong here......and by responding, it just continues the saga.........
I wondered how long it would be before sarcasm raised it's head here shaggy!.......I have no intention of mediating here, just trying to raise some awareness for those that don't understand what kind of forum this is.....A DATING ONE!
Is it really that difficult to understand that?
You might take note shaggy...that the first response I gave to this topic was after numerous posts by yourself.....I was hoping that that the subject might exhaust itself....alas I was wrong hence the response!
Christ once told a parable to his disciples, of a rich man who tithed
many dollars and a poor woman who gave only a few pence then asked the disciples who gave the most? Doesn't take much to figure that out.
I would like to throw that parable back at the skinny guy on the cross and ask him: "who was able to help the most people with the tithing given?"
Pardon moi for cutting the cord at the skinniest point, fellows.
Skinny Guy? I like it, but I prefer Stephen Stills reference as the first not violent revolutionary. Relative point Toad, it's not money that makes the world go round it's peoples contributions whether financial or physical labor. Since I am not a Californian, but have lived there, we are different here, throwing money at a problem is not the all ending solution, but contributions in many other ways make things work. But I will give you credit it was spoken as a true hedonist.
