Latter was known as harem. Harem housed mothers, wife, unmarried sisters and unmarried daughters, which west confused with all being playmates. Very few harems could afford more than one wife. Some Sultans (Turkish kings) harems were known to house as many as 200 or so women, which is a far cry from the Chinese emperors' harems which housed as many as 3,000 women.
