When last I checked [earlier in the week] the exchange rate was 30 - 31.5 Roubles to the $. ikobo calculated the transfer this morning at 28.5...
Not that it matters, but I checked with my bank this afternoon. They can wire money, at a cost of about $20. This goes through the normal ACH system to New York, then a similar international system [SWIFT] to Moscow, and then the Russian internal system to the receiving bank. Process takes 5 working days or so... The only advantage to this method is the accountability, which some methods might not have...
(Midmarkets are derived from the mid-point between the buy and sell rates of large-value transactions in the global currency markets - it isn't the "buy rate" or the "sell rate" at the given time because those are set by market traders and have profit margins built in (of course the "buy rate" will be slightly higher and the "sell rate" slightly lower) - rather this is the up-to-date average of the two.)
The midmarket rate for the ruble right now, as I'm writing this is 28.51 rubles to the dollar. I also checked iKobo and they are converting at 28.5. Not too far off.
Of course that should have read: "buy rates" will be slightly lower and "sell rates" slightly higher....
Buy low and sell high... not the other way around... it does male a difference.
And yes Tim - I might advise buying dollars with your pounds for right now - no big hurry though as it will take a while to turn around.
(I suppose I should write a disclaimer here absolving myself of liability should I be wrong. Would hate for myself ot this fine forum to be sued!)
And to KR regarding the wire transfer - its up to you. But unless you are talking about more than $500, I'd still go with iKobo. Forget taking weeks - we're talking about seconds here. If she has ATMs available - go for it.
