You will never be able to reason with someone who has serious mental problems. I have done my best to ignore him, but the tramp keeps coming back. At one point, even the most patient person in the world, sorry as he may feel for him, ends up telling him to F-off and leave you alone. Insane tramps have a particularly nasty habit of approaching you when you are trying to hold a sensible conversation with someone else. You can call my place a dog box or whatever you like but so far, with three buildings, that would be three dog boxes would it not? The majority of expats that relocate here do a "resort" simply because that's what everybody else does, i.e. they want to come to Philippines and a resort finances them doing so. On the other hand, with my background knowledge of the hotel industry, I've known for some 15 years that I was going to do something similar to this, I just didn't know where so ... I'm a hotelier first and the Philippines came second. But before deciding where in the Philippines I did my research and I read that this island was to be the next place to develop with the Philippines government pumping bucket loads of money in, presently they're concreting the islands unmade main roads, indeed the Australian government paid for sorting out one of the roads to this resort area, and they're currently extending the island's airport runway. Then I needed to source land in a “touristy” location and land was being snapped up fast and, accordingly, what was left was rising in price. I didn't get my optimum location of land that I had hoped for but, with hindsight, I'm in a bl00dy good location less than five minutes walk from one of the top 10 surfing locations in the world and the No. 1 surfing location in Asia. Alas I couldn't get as much land as I hoped for but the locals have gossiped that I've optimized what I have, indeed bearing in mind that the average resort owner expat doesn't have the hotel industry knowledge that I have during the build the locals would observe me having a beer, having a laugh, and they were expecting me to develop the same old “cr@p” as everybody else. The best compliment they could have paid me was after we opened they started gossiping gossiping how nice our rooms are etc. and even other resort owners were coming to take a look. I've only been here 2.75 years, the people I bought this land from were desperate to sell and I got it for PHP1,000.00 per sqm, a year later similar land was changing hands for PHP3,000.00 per sqm, 2.75 years ago there were two flights a week to/from this island, just recently we got up to 10 or 11 flights per week and once they've extended the airport runway it will increase flights even more. My business opened on 01 June 2013, compared to 2013 during June 2014 revenue was up by 189%, July 2014 revenue was up by 129% and so far during August 2014 revenue is up by 269%, it's going crazy, we're receiving email enquiries, SMS enquiries, direct reservations via our own website, just as I was going to bed last night another 5 night reservation came in via agoda.com for a guest arriving today. How much this development cost me to develop remains commercially confidential but I would guesstimate that were I to sell tomorrow then it would sell for at least four times what it cost me to develop it … and it's only been open 15 months!
