Luckily last winter was very warm here, but I can't remember about the previous one without shivering, we had -30 -35 C, and it was cold wind blowing..brrrr very cold
Just to say that when it gets to -32 C The Omck locals go about their daily work just as normal !! In Britain if it hit -10 C the whole country would grind to a halt !!!
Yes it's true about 5 sweaters, and go to the classes at the University, where the central heating doesn't work, and you have to stay there beginning with 8:15 in the morning until 16-17 at day.
And there is nothing unusual about that here too:)
I have a freind who is a teacher in Lugansk, she teaches 14 >15 year olds, and when the heating broke a few months ago they were sent home for almost 2 weeks !! At least some schools have principals with a heart ;o))
Good night Ptichka, its been a pleasure being here with you tonight, thank you :o)))
It was a pleasure for me too:)
School don't work when it's cold, but Universities do, and also people who work they go on working without any changes.
Good night!!!!
Wusses, all of you are! Puhlease, -32 and it's soooo cold. Right now I'm rubing my forefinger against my thumb, you know what that means? I'm playing the worlds smallest violin for you... Is the thought of friction warming you up???! If it is, you seriously have problems my friends.
Why, when I was a kid the snow was up to here! (My hand is at my chest btw)
For all of you with an aversion to cold take note, those in colder climates not only generally live longer, but also have the advantage of playing hockey outdoors for 6 months of the year! What could be so wrong with that?? Sweet Mary and Joseph, if I had a nickle for every complaint about the cold I hear....
For those without a history with the tundra, the wind doesn't actually make it colder.. When I hear Tim complaining of -10 degree weather It makes me cringe. -10 is the perfect temperature for swimming for men, know why? Keeps the fruit and nuts chilled and healthy. Everyday hidden by pants and trapped betwewn thighs really isn't good for the little-tykes-to-be.
Doesn't anyone find it wierd that no one ever complains of extreme heat? Why is it that there are no Congolese, or Jamaicans that complain about how close they are to the equator? Look at what the heat is doing in the middle East for crying out loud!
Anyways, it's friday and my rant has eased my mind. Right now I'm going to watch the playoffs. Go Leafs Go!
I wasnt complaining about it mate, I was just stating that if the UK gets that cold the whole darn country falls to bits LOL
Trains stop running, roads get blocked, total chaos :o))
I recall when I was 14 (which was quite a long time ago), We got snowed into the vilage I lived in at the time by 16 feet high drifts !! They had to helicopter supplies into the vilage for about a week, no school for us, and it was just after Christmas, so we had a ball :o))) Sledging down the main road, which was a very long hill that went for about 2 miles right down through the village :o)) I dont ever recall having a better winter in my whole life :o)) I love the snow, and the cold doesnt actually bother me as I work outside all year round in all weathers, both stinking hot and freezing cold :o) I say outside becasue as my workshop has no heating whatsoever I might as well be outside :o) In fact some days its warmer outside than in !!!
A few winters ago it was so cold in my garage that when I opened the front door in the mornings the light would come on ;o))
I hate the heat actualy Tony :o)) I can work in the cold, I just keep moving and keep warm that way, but when its hot there is sod all you can do to cool down and work at the same time (physical manual work I mean of course !!).
"Trains stop running, roads get blocked, total chaos" Just 2 inches of snow has been known to have exactly the same effect !! I have a photo on my PC that I took a few weeks ago when we had a very sudden snow shower of about 2 inches of snow in 45 minutes, within 5 minutes of it starting some brain donor had manged to bin his car in the ditch oposite my cottage !!! 5 minutes !!! I thought it was so funny I just had to get a photo !! These idiots just hve no idea how to drive in adverse conditions, and they dont care either !! They just continue driving at the same speed, and wonder why on the next bend they lose it !!!
There is nothing bad in snow, but the worst thing is when it's rain with snow and when the temperature is -20-30 C, so everything is frozen and there is a very slippery layer sometimes up to 5-7 cm, and it takes much time for it to melt. So you can't walk fast, the busses drive so slow, it took me once to get to home for 2 hours and a half, though in normal days it took me about 30-40 minutes (had to cross the town from one side to another). This is what I hate about winters here. The cold freezing wind which blows wet snow into your face, and you can't hide anywhere from it. This is what our winters here in Lugask can be. But usually such period lasts not more then 2-3 weeks each winter, but sometimes the whole winter can be like that.
And then nobody thinks about playing hockey or snowballs, it's impossible.
At such conditions many people are sick, and many are diying.
On the contrary we have very hot summers, up to +35 C sometimes. So I know both things, cold and heat.
This has to be called the English thread, all we do is talk about the weather.) Give me hot anyday. I remember that sudden heavy snowstorm, I was amazed by the amount of my colleagues that had small crashes, they couldn't work out why, when they braked the car wouldn't stop" I thought I had abs.lol...braking on snow, God help us...if I ever come to Lugansk, ptichka, I think I'll come in summer)))35 sounds good to me
Summer is very hot here, but the most beautiful time is last spring, when it's not so hot but everything is still green, and not burnt under the hot sun.
Actually today is a holiday here, so I congratulate everybody with it:) It's the 1 day of May, and we usually celebrate it as the real beginning of warm and really enjoyable spring:)))
Yes honey, but at least in your country the buses still run !! In England everything just stops and everyone looks blankly at the small amount of snow and doesnt do anything about it !! :o))
My sister Olya in Lugansk has told me many times how awful these 3 weeks can be for your city, but she has never said that noone goes out, or goes to work, or gets on with every day life, as the English will do in such conditions :o))
I have noticed that in all FSU countries the extremes of weather are far more severe than we are used to, swinging from -30 to + 30 in a matter of days sometimes !!! Its is no wonder so many people can get sick at these times !!
Last summer in the UK was very hot and the death rate increased by 400% in the summerbecause of it !!
Trad LOL abs !!! Bloody useless on anything other than dry or light rain mate :o))
I should know as every time we have snow I have lots of calls from customers who have had bumps wondering why their abs didnt work LMAO
Such idiots to put so much faith in a car !!! For those who dont know what I mean, in snow or on ice, you apply your brakes, the wheels lock up all at the same time (abs relies on varying wheel speeds to do its job) , the abs computer says "He has come to a stop because all 4 wheels are not turning" and it stays locked up as long as you keep your foot on the brake !! And into the back, front or side of whatever you braked to avoid hitting, you go !!!
I sat in my attic watching out the window that day Trad, and taking photos of the idiots who got it wrong :o)) Well funny :o)))
And congratulations to you too Ptichka :o))
Though our official holiday for May 1st, "May Day" is held on Monday when we wont go to work.
In the past we would have a day off work on May the first no matter what day it fell upon, and if it fell at a weekend then we would get the follwing Monday off work. But it was decided that having odd days off in the middle of the week some years was inconvenient for business`s so it was decided that "May Day" holiday would always be the first Monday in May, and its has been so now for many many years :o))
In the UK our authorities are useless too !!! When it snows here it Always catches them a sa suprise, despite weather reports and such like, they never manage to grit the rods until its too late !!!!
I was out of the country last January when the snow suddenly hit and brought the whole of the UK to a standstil for almost 24 hours !! Motorways were blocked and people wer trapped in their cars and all sorts of stupid mess, all because noone bothered to find out what the weather forcats was and plan ahead for it !!!
The same has happened with floods and freezing conditions, in the UK the authorities are never "proo active" always "reactive" and incompetant !!!
In good old New England we also get temperature extremes from the - o F to = 100 F (-18 - 38). Except the hot summers are almost intolerable with wicked high humidity. Give me the cold any time. The snow is great - you hit the ski slopes (-35 plus wind chills a couple times sking last year) - hey you can always put on more clothes in the cold but there is just so much you can take off in the heat! At least around respectable folks.
Are authorities are indeed stupid - but not useless - and they do maintain the roads well.
here here mate !! I prefer cold to hot myslef for that exact reason, in winter I just wear more layers and keep working hard, the only time I feel cold is when I stop working, so when I run out of work on a cold day I come home, you know it lakes sense :o)
But as you say in summer, once you are down to a pair of trousers and a light shirt, or nothing but coverals I cant take much more off and still be able to my job anyway !!!
Fixing cars in swimming trunks might be a way to stay cool, but its not very practical ;o))
