TD,
Only the roses will be on sight...all the other gifts will be packed. The laptop is not coming (this trip, at least)
I don't care wha the rate is for the first few hundreds I exchange. I'll try to get some in Frankfurt...before Izzi gets me loaded with his schnapps shots.
If I was arriving at a fairly civilized hour of the day, instead of the 22:00 eta, I'd wait to get some in town. But by the time we're done with baggage, customs, hugs and kisses it will be at least time to close the airport (23:00)
The last thing I want to do after 30+ hours with little or no sleep in between is hit the town for some 'good rates'.
Sunday morning we do not have that much time to do it either. I plan to sleep in till they kick us out of the hotel.
We also have to ride the train to Tyumen (5 hours) to make it on time for dinner at her mother's house and my first 'russian vodka baptism'
I'm sure I'll run across some ATM machines Sunday, but still I'll be more comfortable with a few rubles in my pockets.
I believe you will spend more on the taxi to the other exchangeoffice than you actually save.. ok, let's say you save 10 dollars on the exchange?? 10 dollars?? You are buying a trip that cost a lot more, spending lots of money, and are willing to go to a non secure exchange office somewhere risking the chance of being mugged the second you set your foot outside the door... good luck.. I rather pay the 10 dollars extra, and spend my time with the girl instead of using a lot of time searching for a "good" deal.. but of course.. your choise... One more thing.. I suppose you do not exchange thousands of dollars?? So may be you save a buck or two... I usually exchange money on the airport, enough for a couple of days or so.. then I go to a "minibank/bankomat" and make a withdrawal on my visa or American Express. Or if I incidentally come across a serious exchange office, I can make an exchange again.. Most of the time I pay with my cards.. Remember.. You can live a day in Russia for what you earn in an hour back at home, so don't worrie about it.. You will be surprised about how little money you will spend, if you don't head of to Moscow or something. Moscow is very expensive! Almost like mid European citys..
Always have some money just in case, but for the most of the time... use your cards where it is possible, a lot safer!! Then you don't have to exchange all the time..
The ones I have used have always had english language as an option, together with some other European languages :)
I have never been to Ekaterinburg, so for that city I cannot answer, but I think it is a standard as long as they accept foreign cards.
My suitcase is packed and strapped down ready for the trip. I am working on the cary on now.
I will try and get some rubles in Frankfurt. I've got 7 hours to kill might as well give it a shot. Flowers too. At least the accomodation problem is solved I will be staying with some Russian woman. She insisted.
God I hope I haven't forgotten anything. I have some BS pieces of jewelry I really hope they don't give me a hard toime about it. I want to keep them in the nice boxes. I really don't want to wear a amethyst heart around my neck I shall feel a right pusti! I am going to risk it. I will just keep that stuff in my carry on.
OK lets try that again but without the spelling errors.

Norwegian, they are americans, they dont think as we do. Iv read several trip repots where men buy very excpensive air fare and pay a lot to agency and when in Russia or Ukraine (in very cheap countries) they start to economy. In taxi, on the restaurant, the toys they buy to "my laidy" kids.
But I dont think Airport Excange is good deal. The best is usual bank or ATM. I dont belive that to buy roubles in Frankfurt is good deal. And this flower thing. Its really not practical to buy them in Fr. and take them to Russia.
But what I know!
I really think you shold wear it around your neck dude! And while you're at it, why not put on some lip-gloss and some eyeliner too? LOL..
Seriously: You should really wear it, it is not worth the risk of loosing it! And personally I would put it back to the box and give it to her later some time during your stay. I don't know if this is the first time you see this girl live, but I would wait with the jewelry if that is the case. Wait till a proper situation! I think you should give her flowers, and a book with nice pictures from where you live (some even come translated to russian if you go to a good bookstore!). And may be bring some western chocolate? Jewelry can wait... Think about it? What a nice thing to do during a dinner in a restaurant or something let's say on day 3 or something.. Don't give it all away the first day... She might feel it a bit overwhelming and emberrassing if you over-do it.. I would buy some small things for the first meeting, and save the jewelry for the right moment... This is just my opinion, it is not a rule to follow.. Have a nice trip, I am certain it will be a success, you seem to be a nice guy! :)
Yes, this I have never understood.. People spend thousands of dollar on a trip, and get into a argue with a waiter or a cab driver over a buck or two.. lol
I have no experience to tell if this is a typical American thing, so i don't wanna follow you on that accusation Annika, but I do agree about the way to save money... I mean.. There isn't money to save in FSU, if you want to save you have to do it before you get there. While you are there you should only consentrate on having a nice time, forget about money!
About exchange, I never said it is a good deal at the airport, but it is acceptabel if you just exchange money for a day or two.. Just to get you going!
OK I will wear the 2 little hearts however I draw the line at the sapphire and diamond bracelet. There is no way I can put that on my wrist. People will talK!!! I'll put it in my pocket.
I appreciate your comments Annika but I've never done that in my life.
When I was in Gautemala I saw the same thing but I would deliberately let them cheat me. To me it was nothing to them it was a lot. It wasn't worth the argument.
I am more concerned about the weather. I live in South Florida. I am going to die with that cold.
Also I don't know about picture books. My lady is a little different from many Russian women. She has lived in Florida for short periods twice. She has seen parts of America I haven't been to. She has also visited France and Italy. That is one of the reasons I liked her from the beginning. Coming to America will not really be a cultural shock as it is for most FSU women.
There are many other reasons too why I liked her but that is another story.
If Im allowed to discuss practical things.
You will buy flowers in Frankfurt. OK. You will take them to Jekaterinburg. OK. Is this convinient to travel with flowers? Why cant you buy them in Ekaterinburg or how that place is called. In every airport have flower shop. In Ekaterinburg flowers defenetly cheaper than in Frankfurt for sure! And you said you will change rubles in Frakfurt.
And all that discussion about ATMs. Isnt that "your ladies" job to find out how it works and in what language.
Annika
I remember somewhere in the forum someone saying that they will keep the flowers for you on the plane and even put them in water. What do you think will happen in Ekaterinburg? Oh hi, just hang on for a minute in the freezing cold while I hunt around and find you some flowers. No, of course not. Toad and I will buy flowers in Frankfurt and take them with us. I will change money in frankfurt. Who cares about the exchange rate? It is only the first amount. I have no intention of arriving with nothing I can use for a taxi etc. We are arriving at 10pm and last time I looked it is -6 degrees faranheit there. I will have been goofing around for in excess of 32 hours. There is no way on earth I am going to be worried about getting a good exchange rate. At that point I won't care.
Also the way I feel about it nothing is my "lady's job". This is my responsibility not hers.
Later I will find an ATM and pull out some more money, no problem.
Finding out where is and how works ATM isnt responcebility, just something somebody must know in her home town.
I have travelled a bit. To Frankfurt too. I havent seen anybody sitting in the aircarft with flowers.
About buying flowers in freezing cold..isnt it logic that flower shops are inside the airport?
Im sure excange rate is better for rubles in Yekaterinburg than in Frankfurt.
But as I said what I know ...my european brain just cant understand some things I read here.
Why this almost unfriendly approach? Do you get offended because of people have some few questions about ATM's? I am also European, but I can't say I recognize and agree with all your sayings. I don't think this is an European way to think, I believe it is your way to think! Of course they have to buy the flowers in Frankfurt! What do you mean? Shall they tell their girl to please go use the toilet or something so they can run away and buy some flowers without her seeing it? Or do you tink she would appreciate that she have to follow him over to the flowerstore? Nooo.. The gifts have to be ready the second the guy meet her! And I agree with Iza.. Just give a f*** about rates, change a couple of hundreds dollar, and you will have money enough to start with!
but.. When that is said.. I agree with you Annika about one thing.. It isn't very practical to travel with flowers... But.. hey.. What else to do?? My self I haven't brought flowers on the airplanes, just other nice presents.. I am saving the flowers to the day I meet her at the airport in Oslo... Then there will be flowers.. LOTS of flowers!!!! And Balloons.. LOL
"my european brain just cant understand some things I read here"
No one accused you there was something wrong with the European bit...
And because you've been in a plane once and did not see anybody sitting clutching flowers hardly sets a precedent.
Me neither so btw, and that is because you hand them to the stewardesses, to plonk them in water - simple huh?
Come on Norway, balloons.... nobody will believe you. Latex yes, balloons no :)
