Ok, I didn't want to start a whole new topic just to tell you that I am quite successful these days... My princess have been here for almost 2 weeks now, and she is now learning Norwegian at a school near by. We are seriously talking about her moving here, and this is the first step. She cannot get work unless she can speak the language. Education doesn't matter at all. She will probably stay for 3 months this time, go home, and come back again after packing some more clothes... yahoooo... Looks good! I have done some more research about work permission and permanent stay for her, and it looks like it will be quite easy. Norway seem to have a special program with Estonia wich I didn't know about untill last week. So if some of you for some reason wondered where I was and what I was up to.. Now you know... I AM BUSY... LOL
Seriously hope all of you guys are great!!
And Annika... Be nice.. I know you can when you want to be! Kiss ;)
Does anyone know if it is hard/expensive to buy a laptop in USA, and then rebuild it to European standards? I guess the powercircuit has to be changed.. Is there something else that has to be done? Is it just a whole lot of work and nothing to gain?
You are alive! Haven't seen or heard much of you!
About the laptop, I brought one to my girl in Russia and it worked perfectly with absolutely no modifications. Like so many modern electronics today almost all new computer devices are dual voltage. I know for a fact all HP, Compaq, and Sony laptops and printers are dual voltage.
I am seeing special deals now for laptops starting at $400. Of course it depends on what your needs are. And...that price is after rebates. You have to wait for a check in the mail, and I am not sure if they will send that check to Norway!!
For $400 you get: Compaq Presario V200Z, with AMD Sempron processor 2800+, 256 MB, 40GB hard drive, DVD-Rom, Windows XP. Of course you would want to spend some additional money to have CD burner(+$40), and 512MB mem(+$50), etc. Initial price is $650, then they send you back $250. Other similar deals are available. And most of these are built after you place your order, so it takes a few weeks before it arrives.
Depending on where you live, you may also have slightly different keyboard layout. QWERTY is the standard in the US. You get used to that very quickly, and if you use a desktop as well, I would recommend bringing a QWERTY keyboard for that from the states, otherwise the inconsistent layout is going to drive you crazy. In some languages, if you need a lot of characters like o and a with two dots, it might become a pain to do that with a standard american keyboard (possible, but no dedicated key for those).
I would also recommend paying a little bit extra for an international warranty.
The price difference is worthwhile though -- easily 20%. If you're going to buy in a store, check prices on CNET.com first to make sure you get a good price.
Thanks for the advise about the laptop. I really didn't think about the keyboard at all... So I guess for me it will be easier to spend some more money instead and buy it here in Norway.
When it comes to the person using Lena/from/Siberia's nick, I think the admin should check that IP up against other members in the forum. WE just cannot accept that kind of scam. This person is hurting and destroying some persons reputation, in this case Lena. It is just not acceptabel!
Good to read that you are enjoying life,Norsky!! I have been a little busy too--but like to pop in and see all of the forum postings from time to time.Katrina sent me a little present--she might already think she owns me. SHe keeps doing my laundry. She uses a lot of cajun spice too. I am eating so much chicken now that I am getting pinfeathers.I have been sneaking out to the salad bars and Mongolian grills.
I think I have said before that I am a plumber. I am multi-occupationed though, and was helping build a moving business in Chicago for a few weeks ( Lake Forest area ). Right around the time Katrina hit,I did some industrial plumbing work in Chihuahua,Mexico. I stayed there for almost a month. Loved the people-but it is even more intensely hot there than in Phoenix. Added to my Spanish skills. I met some people from the New Iberia area ( Louisiana ) and brought one of them back to Arizona after a blazing hot introductory session. I am living in Peoria, now, which is a western suburb of Phoenix. The lady who owns the Illinois moving business hustled me on our agreement, and I got strung along on the pay, eventually losing about 500 dollars. 3 months ago,a lady called to have her belongings moved into a townhouse. There was a big disagreement between her and the negotiator,so she called me and asked if I would do the move personally. I said yes--she paid me the big bucks, and referred me to her company, who also asked for my work condensing 3 medical offices in Tucson into one. I guess they liked me,and offered me work breaking down and transporting laser eye surgery equipment to different cities in Arizona. I am on my way to Yuma today. I love change, and the New Iberia lady already knows of my newest Odessa woman. Plans are again set tentatively to go in the spring ( I spent all my vacation money on tequila and partying in Chihuahua, and my daughter who needed a new apartment for her 2nd baby ) I say tentatively because I am still trying to figure out if she is a vacationer only. She has a daughter,so as always I am cautious, maybe overly so. I was hesitant to take a new job because they will want my complete committment. This time however,I will do what is right for me. I give to everybody at the price of my own needs- denial--always have. So,I hope they are not too heartbroken or pissed when I take off to Odessa. If everything goes well there,I will go back sometime next year to live for a couple of months or so. I will have to study immigration closer, because like any place I have ever been,I am almost certain to fall into another job, thats always been the story of my life. Thanks for asking cousin Iz! Hope you did not suffer the evil winds where you are at!!
Do you have an urge to pick a vocal fight with someone?? Discuss Hare Krishna? Discuss USA's role in the world?? Please do it here... DOn't pollute the forum with non-fsu related topics.
I was sitting in my garden under an umbrella, tanning my legs. I read the newspaper and next to me I had a beer, and only now & then I glanced at my wife busy mowing the lawn.
The neighbour's wife peered over the wall and yelled, on top of her voice "This is scandalous. You should be hung!!" just as I took a nice cold swig.
After licking the cold foam off my upper lip I told her "I am, that's why she mows the lawn"
So N()R, how's the BellaRussian in Scandinavian surroundings? Too hot to handle or do you, just??
;-)
