Some the victor was for the best interest of the people some it was not. But no matter how you look at it the world would not be what it is today if these wars had not been fought. Had the Soviet Union not dug in and fought Germany so fiercely and then as the other countries including the United States came in and fought beside them to defeat Hitler I dare say you would not need to cry about discrimination of races because only one would be left. Authority denotes power and we may not always hear the absolute truth of why we are there but we do our best to elect responsible people (please do not fall off of your chair laughing at that failure) and must trust that they lead in the right direction. Whether or not our leaders make the right decisions our men and women of the armed services are to be honored and respected for their service. They do not give the orders but are responsible to fight, protect, and preserve our freedom and way of life by whatever way our government deems necessary. The United States started as a passive country believing what happened in the rest of the world was not our concern until Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. At that time our views changed in that if a storm started brewing it needed to be controlled before it reach a proportion to destroy across the globe. Australia and the United States to some extent are far enough removed from the middle east, Asia, and Europe that until the last 40 or 50 years they had a big advantage of the difficulty in mobilizing from another country to attack them. With todays weaponry this gap has closed. As for soldiers being killed, I have been amazed at the care that is taken even in war to hit and destroy strategic points and equipment and avoid killing mass numbers of people. This is at a great cost to the length of time required to defeat the enemy but has become the way of US war. Again I would say that the soldier deserves our respect and gratitude whether our government's motives were pure or not. He or she still put everything on the line for a country he or she believed in.
