It's not that hard to get a tourist visa and you can stay in the country for 30 days. I have used a company in St Petersburg called Russian Holiday for mine and there was no real problem. You have to wait but hey - I really wanted to see the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg and Red Square in Moscow!!
