I learned it from ... ... profiles of Russian-speaking women, on dating websites. I guess it is an artifact (another unusual word :) ) of how the profiles are translated from Russian to English. (Also, I met an English teacher in Kyiv who used this word in conversation.) I've noticed that many Russian/English dictionaries use an odd (and really outdated) version of English. Probably, this is worse with dictionaries that were first written in Soviet times. A friend in Ukraine wrote me an email with a verb phrase that I hadn't seen before, and I couldn't guess what it meant. When I wrote back to her that I didn't understand, she explained it in different words, and told me she had gotten it from her Russian/English dictionary. At that time, a search found LESS THAN TWENTY occurrences of the phrase in the whole internet, one of which was on a site called something like "museum of the English language." I have a pretty big vocabulary, and know a lot of expressions that have fallen out of use. The one my friend used in her letter, probably went out of fashion about 150 years ago. In your previous posts it was all about the girls, you haven't mentioned agencies at all. Seems like you're just trying to point a finger at anything. There is a fair share of scammers and bad agencies out there but let's nor pretend all of them are bad. Word of mouth and Internet reviews travel fast and if there are no marriages happening, the agency will not survive long term. Bottom line, think about what is in your locus of control and what can you do. Your post arrived late and I almost didn’t see it. I only had one girl say she didn’t want to continue with the dates,,, and she did it through the interpreter. After my 2009 trip, I didn’t blame the girls too much for behaving strangely,,, I was to see 5 girls in 4 cities! If a girl wrote to me for months,,, then claimed to be making the trip to meet me,,,, then went to see several men before meeting me,,, I may not want to see her either,,,, but you know,,, I would tell her!!! I would tell her to save her money and my time,, that’s where we are very different. In my previous post where I numbered the women,,, I did so to expedite the process. And,, it’s not that they are lying constantly during meetings,, but that there are “discrepancies” with their stories in person compared to what was wrote in letters. Very often I will go out for dinner or supper for a first meeting,,,, and you know,,, discrepancies pop up before looking at the menu?? They all say that they haven’t met with other men,,,, but then you find out otherwise,, in person or in correspondence. For second meetings, I’d like to know if they are writing to others?? How can they be seeking marriage with one man,,, while actively seeking others? I don’t know of a good agency or website,,,, or of a good city. Some are worse than others and have a world famous reputation,, those should be avoided. Girls that belong to agencies, no longer function like individuals,,, they follow agency rules.
