The relationship between Crimean Tatars and Russian authorities is bad.
Elder members of the community still remember how, in 1944, Josef Stalin’s Soviet socialist Russia deported Crimean Tatars to Central Asia and northern Russia. Some 170 years before that, the Russian empire annexed Crimea, previously the territory of Ottoman Empire, and began replacing Tatars with Slavic people.
Russia's aggresion continues as Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said elections in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions "will be important to legitimise the authorities there".
But Ukraine and Western governments say the elections should not go ahead.
