I think Americans not only prevent their sisters and daughters from mixing with others, they demand the same of any white girl. I got a paid ride from this university girl to another city when I was a student. We stopped by to pick up an American dude who asked me: "Mind if I sit in the front seat [next to her]?" Only after he got dropped off first, did I was pissed to learn that he was only a rider, just like me (I thought she knew him). They do the same at the consulates. But they want to go to Phillipines and FSU and get their women.
(2) Russia: African Student Killed In St. Petersburg In Possible Hate Crime

I think all of this is very, very funny -- I'm going to ask my wife to read it. I don't intend to join this debate, but as it seems appropos, I wanted to share my experience.First let me say I am African-American, black colored or whatever other term anyone would like to use to describe someone with "negroid" heritage. I have a diverse hertiage, though, and so unusual features.
I met my wife last summer in the States. I was not interested in Russian women and, in fact, I was hesitant to even date a Russian woman because of all the stereotypes I'd heard. But my wife speaks four languages, is extremely intelligent and charming and is all class. She does not look like anyone else I have ever met (nor does she "look" like a Russian for that matter); she has grey eyes (which sometimes appear blue or green), reddish-brown hair and asian facial characteristics; in short, she has unusual features. Where ever we are (Russia, France, U.S.) people stop and stare, mouths agape, and then proclaim her singular beauty. I describe my wife's physical characteristics only to make the point that Russia is a vast and old country -- leaving aside the question of negroid-caucasian miscegenation (which appears to be a very special category to most), Russia hardly seems to be entirely hostile to diversity. I happen to think that some Americans are tolerant as I was raised by a "white" family and, because of my social situation and not my preferences, have dated very well educated "white" women from privileged backgrounds almost exclusively (I was married, very briefly, to a "mixed" woman and have also dated women from East Germany, Brazil, Japan, etc).
Like many people, I believed that Russia would be an extremely hostile environment for an African-American. I thought that my wife's family would be completely opposed to our marriage and expected that her father and brothers would throttle me and leave me in the Siberian tundra, a spot of coal staining an endless expanse of white (well, I'm not really "dark-skinned", but I'm sure you guys get the drift). Instead, I was overwhelmed by questions and exclamations about my bravery. I even had to deal with the infamous Russian bureaucracy (and I was treated like a VIP -- I'm not joking). Once I learned enough of the language, they were, for the most part, quite pleasant. I will note, however, that security at the SVO-2 Hotel seemed to be run by skinheads, but I only stayed there once when I had a layover from a flight from Siberia.
I have been to Russia (Moscow, Siberia but not St. Petersburg) four times since November, 2006 and pictures of me with my wife's family adorn the walls of their home in a very small village in the Russian Far East. They are some of the nicest people I have ever met. In Siberia, fewer people stared at me than do here in the States. My wife's visa interview was on Hitler's birthday and I stood outside the embassy while she was interviewed -- I noted curiosity, but no overt hostility. When I told my wife about this discussion, she laughed and asked me whether it was one of those stupid message boards for "those desperate people who try to meet Russian women or American men over the internet." There are all sorts of prejudices in this world and there are more things between heaven and earth than are dreamt of in our philosophies. Best regards to all.
I should clarify -- "they were, for the most part, quite pleasant" refers not to my wife's family, but to other Russians that I met. My wife's family was never anything but amazingly warm and friendly. Having learned what I have about Russians, I am quite surprised that they were so pleasant so quickly. Furthermore, I meant no offense in quoting my wife, I just wanted to make the point that any given prejudice is informed by personal circumstances and perceptions. My wife's prejudice towards internet dating is no better than prejudice towards inter-racial dating. Finally, as regards the news articles about race crimes, but a brief review of the US news will reveal usage of the word "makaka" by a senate candidate from Virginia, the dragging of a man behind a truck in Jasper, Texas, the assault of two white teenagers by four black teenagers, etc. A review of the news from any country will reveal far more crimes against people of the same race and/or nationality. Most people, white, black, blue or green, are talking monkeys and there are very few true humans walking this earth. Again, best to all.
Percival, like yourself, I'm a "man of colour" (I love that stupid idiom for some reason) but from England, now living in Florida, USA.
I have found that on my 8 trips to Russia, I was treated, by and large, as a Rock Star. All this without being in any way ostentatious, or flashing money or jewellery or anything. Just being my usual charming self.
This has got to be one of the stupidest threads I have ever read on the Internet. What a load of hogwash. LOL.
This one will keep me laughing for days. Thanks for the chuckles, LadyJane.
