Especially those invaders coming in under false pretences. Maybe it has escaped you but the US is not an innocent party in world affairs. The US regularly supports right wing dictatorships that have limited or no public support to achieve perverse social and economic objectives. Now if you dont know the US supported the Mujahadeen in Afgahnistan simple to weaken soviet influence. There was no alturistic goal in this like helping Afgans to a better life. Thousands of people were killed, maimed and dispossed for te pleasure of being puppets in a global power struggle. At the same time the US still suuports several widely disliked regimes in the middle east. The reality all but 1 of the hijackers were Saudis. If you dont know the Saudi regime is disliked by many in the country for being puppets to the evil US. I have made a lot of money in capitalist enterprises. Mainly by seeing the inefficiencies in capital markets and taking advantage of it. The thing that the conservative viewpoints dont recognise is that there are many items that are not priced correctly. Take for example coal. It is relatively cheap to produce but has substantial environmental costs that we dont factor in. Global warming, so2 and mercury emmissions, fly ash disposal. We take short term monetary advantage but we dont take long term account of the cost of use. I could come up with hundreds of examples, the current financial crisis throws up plenty of examples of greed and poor regulation causing massive financial hardship. Conservative view is do nothing it will work itself out. Realistic view is there needs to be prudent changes to executive remunerations that limit reward for risk taking with shareholder money. Its fine if you run a hedge fund, not if you run a bank. The reality is that the last decade has been dominated by Bush, Cheney and Blair. What a mess they left, both politically and economically. The one thing you should consider Sooty is that the worlds second biggest economy is now China, still a communist state. They are still growing at a rapid pace though now back to 6 - 8%. Our recession is due to the mortgage in banks that will probably foreclose. Banks are afraid to lend because if they do foreclose, it will take a big chunk of their cash. Almost no one saw it coming. Their thoughts are the home prices will go up and up, and the banks will own expensive real estate if their owners cannot pay. I wouldn’t worry about China owning American real estate, Gib Doe. That will keep the payment of our debts to them in the US. The property is in the US. It will do better here than spending it elsewhere. If an apartment building or business building needs new capital to keep it going, investment is welcome no matter where it comes from.. Now Gemini, China growing 6-8% is a bit high. China is also in recession. That means negative growth. Also look at the per capita GDP of China for 2008 from the CIA Worldfactbook. It is $6,100. That is lower than Ukraine at $7,800. China’s recent prosperity only includes a small, very small percent of the population. Look beyond Hong Kong, Beijing and Shang Hai. I will concede that this cost a lot. It cost the US a little more than 600 billion so far. But, if spending is bad for the economy, then Obama in his first week in office just did a big blunder in spending 789 billion and he just got in office. History has a very clever way of repeating itself and I see exactly that happening right now with the influx of Sub Continent immigrants and I also see the investment of the Japanese during the late 70’s through to early 90’s repeating itself with Chinese and Indian money and as far as I am concerned it is more than welcome investment. As for the perceived (By some) Muslim takeover, I contend that similar to the racial takeover which never happened when the Italians and the Greeks came in by number, the Australian, American, New Zealand and other similar cultures are too strong and too well founded on the freedoms which have made these countries sought after places to live and I remain convinced these cultures will survive intact and to be totally contentious, this IMO is in no small part due to the early Christian ideals of many of the founders.
