If you look like tourist, a guy runs by you and drops wad of money, you stop( if you do) and another guy stops with you, either you or other guy yells to guy who dropped money, he comes back and now comes the third guy claiming to be police, guy who dropped money says money is missing, police guy asks guy next to you to see his money, he shows his money then police guy asks you to see your money, claiming YOU took some, this is where bribe starts, if you pay up, you won't get taken to station. Happened to a friend of mine( he actually picked up the money)he was scared but ultimately ran off. Happened to me a few years ago( I didn't touch money) but it didn't hit me what was happening until police guy asked to see my money, then I remembered about scam. I told them that we should all head to the police station and speak to someone as I walked off, of course, then went the other way. Both of those incidents happened on Khreschatyk. I have yet to read( or remember) of any 'semi muggings', lonely, wasn't either baron or durak. Durak had his ponytail pulled during a gathering one time. Someone had done it for fun,,, not to steal. I haven’t been robbed or pick-pocketed over there either. I still keep two wallets, and Velcro on my jacket pockets. With me only going over during the winter time,,, I’m able to store all of my stuff in the jacket. I wouldn’t really know what to do during the hot summer months. Getting back to DC's original statement of thief(pickpocketing) instead of scamming, you agreed with him and gave your statement above. In summertime, how about carrying little money on you when out???? Since you don't use metro, I doubt anyone would get close enough to you to pickpocket you.
