danny,
Australians, in the main, have the advantage that most cities are close to the sea, yes I remember enjoying the seafood basket at the Arab Steed, Hutt Street, Adelaide and I've even had the crayfish sandwiches in Pelican Pete's, Kingscote, Kangaroo Island.
"The British add 'acids' to fatty foods to break down the fat, by tradition we add vinegar (acetic acid) to chips, mint sauce (vinegar in it) to lamb, apple (acid) sauce to pork, these do serve to add taste to a meal but their primary function is to break down the fat. "
Whats the excuss for the mushy peas then :). In the UK they also serve chips with curry, gravy or baked beans and even would you beleive cheese. Not sure how those break down the fat, but I doubt those buying them care! In scotland they deep dry mars bars and pizzas, but thats another story.
A good fish and chip shop should serve as well as differnt types of fish, battered mussels, osyters, prawns, scallops and calamari pieces. And don't forget Kumara (sweet potateo chips). And in NZ if your lucky Paua and Whitebait patties. And if your like Jetmba you can get a hot dog (battered saveloy on a stick with tomato sause, danny may call them dagwood dogs?), pineapple ring or battered orion sauage. You may even get burgers, traditionally in NZ a burger should contain a slice of beetroot and an egg as well as a beef patty. In the UK its just fish, sauages and pies.
ben,
Why do you think duck l'orange is served? The oranges are there for their acid content to break down an extremely fatty duck.
Peas, whether they be whole or mushed, have got nothing to do with serving acid with the meat, we put mint sauce (vinegar) on lamb but we also serve it with potoates and vegetable, perhaps peas. Curry sauce, that's an addition to chips but it doesn't prevent the chips being vinegar'd, likewise with baked beans, cheese etc.
Indeed it is the outer surfaces of the chip that are saturated in fat hence the traditional British chip is by far healthier than the sort of fries that these fast food outlets serve, those 'fries' are so thin that their fat content percentage is so much higher and they are not traditionally served with an acid to break down the fat hence obesity is a problem wherever McDonalds etc. may be and even in UK now because the kids favour that fast food in preference to traditional fast food.
Yes Scotland, I had the displeasure of working there for a few weeks and living on take away food, even a Chinese take-away was full of grease, in a chip shop everything goes in the deep fat including the meat pies.
But the tradition of the British fish & chip shop, and the fish & chip shop is of British tradition, is to serve a fish based family meal, of staple diet, as an alternative to people cooking the same at home and it is not part of the staple British diet to serve all those other seafoods that you mentioned.
And how would a fish & chip cook a prawn? I was in a hotel in Italy last year and the prawns I ordered came deep fried, they were absolutely cremated, saturated in fat, and had no taste whatsoever.
"And how would a fish & chip cook a prawn? I was in a hotel in Italy last year and the prawns I ordered came deep fried, they were absolutely cremated, saturated in fat, and had no taste whatsoever."
Grilled not deep fried, but its not so common to find places with prawns...pity.
Mint sauce on lamb is a must, I'll give you that one.
Ben,
The point I was trying to make, in response to your post that vinegar is added to make taste, is that it is there for a far more important than taste, it is there for health purposes. Indeed, traditionally, we have tartare sauce for fish, horseradish sauce for beef, these all have acid content to combat the fat of the food.
And what about these countries that serve their beer so cold to 'kill' the taste? This Guiness 'Extra Cold' is an example, there is only one optimum temperature that Guinness should be served at but by serving 'Extra Cold' bars can get away with serving a poorer quality beer.
And how is Australia's hole in the ozone layer doing danny?
And yes, I recall my day out on Wedge Island in the Spencer Gulf, after lunch me and an Aussie friend were on the beach hooking our lines up, I was a little ahead of him, and he cursed that if I caught one ahead of him ..... , well no sooner was my line in the water than there was a fish on the end of it :)
Martin, it’s the first time anyone’s ever tried to convince me the English drown their chips in vinegar purely for health reasons. Yeah I can just see people asking for more vinegar cos their on a diet!
As for extra cold beer, it needs to be extra cold always!! You can stick to your vinegar and chips, mushy peas and warm beer, I’ll pass on those!
Danny, apart from that, Australia (and maybe together with NZ) really has the best standard of living, no offence to any other country, including the one I was born, no pollution, little crime, but the real treasure of Australia are the people. I really miss a steak, and what about the prawns...priceless....
danny,
For your information, and at the time I was there, the 99 year lease of Wedge Island had just been bought up by a property developing company and people could opt for one of about 3 designs of house to have built there, and I was one of a group that went there as VIP guests for the day, all expenses paid.
No I didn't swim there and, no, I didn't go by boat either, boats are for sailors, you've forgotten about the 'rubble' landing strip on the island or didn't you know about it in the first place? Whilst it was probably the most hairiest and turbulent (flying in over the wedge of the island) landing I have ever experienced I flew there.
Now if you know of a way to fish from a Piper PA-31 Navajo then I'd dearly love to hear about it? And as for throwing objects at the animals, what animals? As I recall there were a few wallabees on the island and that was about it.
I didn't eat in too many different Adelaide establishments, I can recall a fun night out at a Thai restaurant, our Christmas dinner was a BBQ in the park by South Terrace, opposite where we were staying, sometimes we'd have dinner parties in our apartments or at an Aussie's home but aside from that it was mainly the Arab Steed on Hutt Street because the 'pub grub', as the landlord Shane modestly called it, was outstanding compared to any equivalent we had previously experienced and we had a special deal (that I set up) at the Arab Steed.
Danny, we are staying in Ukraine for the time been until we sort out the legal issue with the little girl, than we’ll make a full move to Italy, I have a place to live there, I wanted to make a full move to Europe in the past so this will happens, but Australia is on our mind, we’ll go there one day, for sure, but at this stage cannot see us living there.
Never the less I still think is one of the best places in the world, no doubts. FSU people have difficult appreciating Australia fully ( as most Europeans).
"BF96 MINI GLOCK 8MM A compact blank firing version of the Glock 17 reduced to 17.5cm length x lO.Scm height and weighing in at 826 gins this snappy little auto packs 10 she9ls and operates in absolutely authentic style"
WOW!!!!
I'm sure the dogs will be scared now :)))))
If anything's up for sale - why not buy the REAL thing then? Bigger too, not 'reduced', so more impressive on an avatar.
It would be wise to be able to spell correctly if you wanted to call someone 'dumb', for maybe some one reading these posts will wonder exactly who the 'dome' one is.......just some thoughts...
Kind of reminds me of a couple charaters in a couple movies....remember 'Chance' in movie 'Being There' with Peter Sellers or 'Forrest Gump' with Tom Hanks....a couple simpletons who became successful despite being oblivious to anything important.
Is that 8mm common handgun Ammunition in Australia? You can really make that cap gun shoot real bullets. Doubtful. New size to me.
What is ridiculous Danny and it shows something to me. One your not mentally balanced enough or smart enough to own a real handgun. You would end up a statistic. Also you guys weren't smart enough to stop you own government from classifying shotguns as assualt rifles. Though you are such a rebel, haven't you broke some fishing laws there, boy that would get you on the 10 most wanted list.
The Glock 17 is not called FBI anything, but it is widely used by law enforcement around the world and the popular calibre is 9mm. I'll probably insult Thunderdome here, but I call 9mm's girls guns. My glock is of the .45 ACP. Glock is a nice handgun, but to me a little overpriced.
My personal carry sidearm is a Taurus .45 ACP. Made is Brazil but uses Smith and Wesson Tooling fashioned of the model 59. Reason I don't like the 9mm it will careen off of windshields and I did that test with a buddy and his 9mm Beretta. He shot it at some old cars on my uncles property and the bullet did bounce off the windsheild, not once but 3 times, not to say he didn't penetrate it he did. I fired 6 shots with my M1911a and it went through all six times.
Personally Danny only fools and weak of mind and spirit will have their pictures taken with a firearm in their hands. Must make you think you're some tough guy. I've never had my picture taken with a gun and I own them. And before you decide to threaten some American with that blank gun you better be sure he isn't carrying. Some Americans and I know many, won't blink and eye, or draw a breath when they drop the hammer on you. You're an idiot.
