I pay nothing on my home that I own, no mortgage, no ground rent, no rates and no tax. There is up to 12% VAT on some items in the shops but pretty much everything I buy is for the business so all tax deductible and, at the end of the day, it is my guests rather than I paying for it. In the shops pork is $3.90 per kilo, chicken $3.04 per kilo, rice $1 per kilo, gasoline is currently $1 per litre but on an island this size we use very little of it, electricity is moderately priced, gas comes in bottles and is very economical, water costs us nothing as it comes from our own well. Meanwhile the business that I have developed here is going from strength to strength. There is no VAT for unprepared food items in the US. Chicken at $3.90 a kilo...1 kilo is 2.2 lbs...that means 1 lb is $1.38...add VAT, if applicable $1.54. I just paid $0.89 per lb for a whole, uncut chicken. Yes, it was on sale. Rice at $1.00 a kilo...1 kilo is 2.2 lbs...that means 1 lb is $0.45...add VAT, if applicable $0.51. I just paid $18.00 for a 50 lb bag of jasmine rice. That means $0.36 per lb. That is regular price at Costco. Gasoline at $1.00 per liter...1 liter is .26 gallons...that means 1 gallon is $3.79...add VAT, if applicable $4.24. California gasoline prices are one of the highest in the US because of liberals, playing with additives. Yet, regular gasoline is $3.33 per gallon today. Is around 20% in the EU. When you come here to visit the greatest country in the universe, "the Republic of California" expect to pay SALES TAXES ( not a VAT ), depending which city or county you do your shopping. I did look it up. There is no such thing in the US that I am aware of. That is why I put, "if". Do you know what "if" means, Martin and Beemer? For simplicity, I used VAT instead of Sales Tax because Martin used it. I know nothing about VAT and I am not sure anyone outside the US knows sales tax. You can call me an idiot for not knowing what VAT is, but not knowing what "if" means would be worse. I did make my point, didn't I? Like I said, Martin. You are lousy at telling my stories. You are still crying about that job I lost in 2008? I have moved on. For the record, they decided to get rid of me and then told me why. I gave adequate answers to their charges, but they decided to get rid of me before I even gave them an answer. It was all because I insisted that the HR director fill out a vacation or sick leave form if she takes either. It was my job to record that for all employees, including her. But, she did not. Further, she decided to work Fridays at home. I didn't know whether she was working, sick or on vacation. She was friends with the CEO and I don't know what she told her. I kept up with the employees there. It took them two years to find an adequate replacement. As a foreigner I'm not allowed to earn a salary here but as a business owner it is a grey area that is turned a blind eye to. However I have an "expenses only" arrangement with my business, i.e. I live on "expenses only" whilst all surplus monies are retained within the business for future investments such as a 25KVA diesel generator, a new roof, new fencing, general maintenance and wear and tear etc. The point I was making earlier was that it costs so little to live here that I don't need to earn a western salary and I'm having a great time being my own boss, working permanently from home and without some dumbass accountant questioning if I'm working or not. Funny ..... It's a thing here that all these businesses have an accountant, they call them a bookkeeper here, and I found bookkeepers trying to sell their services to me. I questioned of my ex girlfriend Jane "Why the f*ck do I need a bookkeeper when I attended and completed a bookkeeping course myself some 20 years ago?
