Not because of the color of your skin, but because (I was told this) Indian people are taking away their places in Universities. British born, privately educated and I live in London. I'm a masters university graduate and thankfully I have a professional career which I enjoy. I've been lucky enough to have traveled to Russia, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland and the Czech Republic, so I feel I have a little experience here when it comes to women in these areas. I appreciate quite a few of you have a great deal of experience, being natives or very frequent travelers to this area of the world. I plan to travel to more countries around Central and Eastern Europe so will broaden my experiences further. What I have found is there will always be people who have deeply racist and bigoted views, wherever you go. As someone who isn't racist whatsoever, I avoid such people because they will waste your time. Whatever their race, it's good practice to avoid negative people and try to treat everyone as an individual first and foremost. Oscar Wilde once said; 'Patriotism is a virtue of the vicious'. It is this blind patriotism of land and borders, flags and culture that serves to divide our species. Of course one day we will have collectively moved past this primitive mode of thinking, but unfortunately we've been born into an era of wallowing in self pity and showing a permanent suspicion of our fellow man based on very trivial differences. As for racists and general prejudice in former soviet union countries, I wouldn't say it was common to experience it first hand, but you can feel it's present in some of the people you meet. Try not to travel alone to Russia. I went alone of course being a brave and slightly stupid soul, but I made sure I didn't walk anywhere alone at night and always met people (pre-planned) who were kind hearted enough to show me around. There are plenty of guides who will do this, try and get one with access to a car. It will be much easier and isn't expensive considering the alternative; moping around on your own with a guide book and no security. I went to St.Petersburg in Russia, which, being a historic city and tourist destination, is probably one of the safest cities if you're not white. However there's also a very large concentration of skinhead gangs in Russia and especially St.P (widely publicized here in the UK) so it would be good to not walk around alone whatever time of day, just in case you come across some. My Russian friends will say I'm being paranoid but I think it's better to be paranoid and safe, than care-free and dead. Also, I hired a bodyguard, ex military, who was a pastor at a church and also a tourist guide. He charged £30 a day which I thought was very reasonable. Russia first. In St.Petersburg I met two friends, women I'd previously met in a club in Prague. One was a waitress there and the other did PR for a nightclub. They'd returned to St.P to see their families; what better opportunity to see Russia I thought! First thing I noticed about St.Petersburg, the noise, pollution and suicidal driving style. If I had to choose between driving in the middle east or in asia/far east or Russia, I don't think Russia would be my first choice. Secondly, you notice the government in Russia spends far less money on maintaining its infrastructure. My apartment was on the main street, Nevksy Prospekt (modern apartment in crumbling communist building), and at first I was very reluctant to venture outside. Especially since I'd arrived in the evening and it was already dark. However my friends were eager to see me so I thought ok, what have I got to lose? 30 minutes later I was walking down the street with two attractive blonde women. There were a few stares from people but that sort of thing doesn't effect me. I know the difference between a stare out of curiosity and one where the person is staring out of pure hatred. It helps if you're dressed as a student though, you seem less threatening and more in keeping with modern culture. We actually went to an arab bar/restaurant on the main street. There are a few places like this dotted around St.P, also a few sushi venues too. During no time at these places did I receive anything less than friendly service (from Russian staff). The waitresses were overly friendly even, as if they wanted to show how hospitable they could be. Young, educated people in this part of the world should not have a problem with your skin color. Avoid any who do because they will have inherent sociopolitical, ideological views which are deeply rooted in their psyche. You haven't got the time to psychoanalyze everyone you meet, let alone change their point of view. There is a more visible difference between the very poor, and the wealthy. I saw some sexy, tall, model-type girls who on closer inspection were actually drug addicted beggars! Transversely I saw very young girls driving around Ferraris, Porsches. Not to mention quite a few russian men with very young gfs, one smug looking middle aged guy had two girls in his arms! Certain things are tolerated here which aren't tolerated in mainland Europe. Probably because the majority of society just don't have the energy to deal with it. You should know that many people regard the Russian government as being racist. Be wary and respectful when stopped by police. I was stopped and asked to produce papers a couple of times. Police there now have been told to salute and be polite to tourists. I suspect their politeness had more to do with my british passport. If I were from kazakhstan or any borderline country they may have been less friendly. Anyway, it was a good experience in all. Both of my friends actually like me but one got there first and wants me to be her bf. She worked in a bank in St.P and is now back in Prague working in finance. None of my friends have a problem with me being muslim, or not white! I have other friends in Moscow who I may consider visiting but for the moment I'm in no hurry. The Baltics. I found these to be much more developed in terms of infrastructure. It was cleaner, you got a feeling society in general was more civilized. By that I mean things worked better; transport, education, law and order, etc etc. I visited the baltic states with an arab friend of mine, a socialist studying a phd in policy making, who was fascinated by FSU countries. To satisfy his crazy lefty leanings towards communism we visited all the former soviet sites of any significance. It was a good way of getting a grasp with what these people went through. I'd recommend the former KGB HQ, now museum in Vilnius. To cut a long story short, we got a few stares in Tallinn, and I met a girl in a club. She was pretty, student etc. Many of the people are very pro western and not at all racist. Sure the older generation probably harbor racist views but that's not something you experience first hand. We came across the guy who had earlier driven us to our apartment from the airport, he was at a bar and very drunk. He'd just gone through a divorce and felt deeply unhappy. He HATED the changes that were happening to his country and had a deep disliking for the west. He was a pretty old fashioned 30-something and, although he liked us and wanted to spend all night drinking with us, it's not difficult to see how such disdain for progress can manifest itself as racism and bigotry under the right circumstances. We all went to a club and the door men threw him out after 5 minutes. Probably just as well. Riga; didn't spend much time there. More of an overnight stopover and a chance for my friend to nurse his hangover! Vilnius; was stared at so much it was slightly daunting. But, we were also waved at and smiled at a lot too. Met a girl at a club, she came to dance with me but didn't know much english. Oh well. Also met a young Russian army guy in a bar, he told me I could have any girl there, just say the word and he'll introduce me! Hung out there for a bit, then we popped into a packed pizza joint on the way home. You can tell a lot from how people behave at late night eateries. They're usually drunk and they've let their guard down. I found people were friendly and curious. Those who didn't like the look of me didn't do anything about it so I wasn't bothered. Very attractive women + Pizza = good. It's worth noting that in most parts of the UK, late night take-out food places can be threatening. Poland, Czech, et cetera; Central Europe is largely the same as Western Europe in terms of socio-economic development. There are a few disparities with wages and standard of living. That is, someone on minimum wage in the UK will ultimately have a higher standard of living than someone earning minimum wage in either Czec Rep or Poland. But this gap is closing and I think Eastern Europe will follow suit. I have met some women in Poland, one wants to marry me. I have feelings for her, maybe love. I haven't felt anything for anyone in 8 or so years now so for me it's too soon to tell. And we all know how difficult it is to pin down emotions when someone lives far away. In Prague, I made some black friends, surprisingly. They all had white czech gfs, one was married, with her parents blessing. I found them to be very polite, hard working and eager to learn. Since the last time I was there, one has opened his own business. It was good to hear their stories, how they ended up in Prague and what they planned to do. From what I saw, they really had to work and study hard to stay in the country legally. I felt sorry for them because they worked god awful hours, studied and had little time left for sleeping. Future travels; I'm going back to Prague, then I'm going to Bucharest because I have two dates there. Plus I think Bucharest will have the right combination of danger, stunning women and excitement I'm looking for without being too dangerous (although they have a lot of stray dogs there bizarrely!). Also Buenos Aires, Argentina. Probably the most European-like country in South America. I think there are beautiful women in all parts of the world. Race is a social construct derived mainly from perceptions conditioned by events of recorded history, and it has no basic biological reality. We accept the idea of race because it’s a convenient way of putting people into broad categories, frequently to suppress them. If women find you physically attractive, sensitive, charming, kind, polite, funny, along with any other positive attribute you can think of, women will like you. It really is that simple. Disregard anyone who has a habit of making crazy generalizations and sweeping statements about people. They are sad individuals. Personally I date whoever I want to date. I have no notions of grandeur and don't think I'm superior to anyone else based on my ethnicity, citizenship, upbringing or whatever. On occasion I date women here in the UK. I'm not a social outcast who can only get someone from a desperate and depressed background. I just like meeting people, women and travel. Combining these make for a winning combination!
