People from the Caucasus are commonly referred to as "blacks" (they usually look and sound different from ethnic Russians, but their skin is usually not very dark at all). It is quite common in Russia to regard them with great contempt, and people are not shy about expressing this. Russians who are really intelligent, kindly, and cosmopolitan can make comments about the "blacks" that by modern Western standards would at least be considered to be really poor taste. If you're a man like me, who believes that bigotry has caused a vast amount of needless misery and murder, you may feel some shock when your beautiful, educated, and dignified Russian or Ukrainian date makes a crude generalization about "blacks" or Jews. Of course, these attitudes are not universal, and there are plenty of people in Russian-speaking lands who don't hold such bigoted beliefs. But bigotry is not criticized, condemned, or thought dangerous in the same way as has become common in the West. P.S. to Sooty: I know a Ukrainian gal (as fair-haired and skinned as you could wish) who recently converted to Islam, as happens in almost every country of the world. Religion does not equal race! In the 1950's in the US birth rates where very high and we were at probably one of the more prosperous times in our history. Then came the 60's and the overprivileged children who decided it was time to rebel agains their parents. This is what we own today. Back in the 50's it didn't take two incomes to run a home, now that we have this socialist give away society, it takes two incomes for some just to keep their heads above water.
