Jetmba apology accepted. Lets not fight, if your ever in Moldova or the UK I'll shout you a beer.
I don't think it is Apal he liked to write novels, where as these posts where short, but you never know.
Since I've been here we have started to rent a 4 room apartment that is huge and in a good location. I now have a 10 by 7 metre office to work from although at the moment it only has a very small desk and a chair. It costs 500 euro per month to rent long term. Now I have to start learning russian seriously.
Jet the Pimsluer course 90 lessons is a good start and is simple because I can do 60 minutes easy driving every day. I went through it twice and then back through later. But the Rosetta Stone 1 and 2 is almost a necessary follow up to get words other than the polite conversational. Rosetta Stone does not stick like the Pimsluer does and gets very difficult when you get to the higher lessons especially level 17 which is cartoons and words such as "go straight 3 blocks to the corner turn left two blocks and then right and go to the corner and look left to see the library." You almost need a dictionary or the English version also to see what it is saying. But it contains over 8000 phrases and if you learn it and Pimsluer you will be able to talk Russian. Understanding them when they talk is a different story. I can say almost what I want to if the person I am talking to has a good perception and can talk back slow and simple or in English.
Jet...I too started out with cd's and rosetta stone on computer but best learning was in a class
environment where you hear someone speaking language and you asnwer back in same language. I am lucky in my small town( 20 miles north of LA, I guess big by many standards 250,000)the russian class was offered at a junior college, small class of 8. I would think closer to LA, there would be many classes offered because there are areas where many russians(eastern europeans) have settled. What is nice is now I can read all the signs as I drive by...they make sense to me.:)))
By the way I am back home from my trip. Tons of work for me and much to think about. It seems every trip gets a little less expensive, although airfare increases. I think I am becoming aware of situation between me and girl quicker. I have no problem with cutting a meeting short if things seem to be not going anywhere. Something quick like a cafe works fine. I remember those long dinners and numerous translators from earlier trips. As I said before I have my rules on this FSU dating thing. What I run into most is girl wanting a friend or translator to be around, which is ok in first meeting but I feel isnot a good idea in any future getting together. A problem I always have is what amount to leave as a tip for service in restaurant. I usually ask girl Iam with and always get different answers. Anywhere from 0% to 5-6% or an amount that sounds good looking at bill. I don't know if there is a know percentage. My tipping at friends restaurant( previous post) does not count because I had more of a personal relationship with waitresses!! ;)))) Any ideas???
As of now, I likely will go back to Moldova, even if girl I met there doesn't work out when I go back. There is much to do there and girls were friendly. My friend there can also take me around to the popular places if I have free time and probably be in Odessa for a 4th time......I have some unfinished business there!! :))) I feel there is a big difference between meeting a girl through agencies and one free sites or by chance. Like at home, it is best if introduced by friends, a little more openess. I don't believe too much in meeting girls on street, it can be fun but they are probably not interested in foriegn guy and don't speak english very well. when I was in Odessa, a couple girls heard me speak english and commented on me.....saying I am old guy looking for a young girl( in russian)and that I will be used for what I can buy her....why do I bother to come to ukraine(to each other).......as I thought what to say....it came to me...thank you for your nice words about me......my russian is okay, how is your english????( in russian)......they never said a word.
Good story Beemer. Thats one reason I'd like to know russian to hear what people are saying about you :) The other would be to talk to my wife in russian and not have my friends have a clue what we are talking about. Thats pretty good you understood that. I would have picked up a few words but not the whole sentence.
I normally tip 10% as its easy to work out. But the whole tipping thing is strange to me, its more of an american thing i think. What gets me is why they can't just include the tip in the total price if they expect a tip. Would be so much easier. Tipping always makes me uneasy as you don't what to upset someone. I would have thought an american brought up on the concept of tipping would have no problem with it. I recall staying in a hotel in the states and someone mentioned about leaving a tip for the cleaner. Just crazy.
If you come back to Moldova Beemer you'll have to show me this bar you mentioned before!
Hey Ben!! Well I don't know russian that well but I got most of what was said. Maybe they were giving me more 'compliments' than I thought. You are right about one thing, I always wondered if translator was saying everything I said or was chit chatting with girl. But most of what I say to girl is half russian and half english, okay, okay, maybe one-third russian and two thirds english!!!. If I want to impress girl I will throw in some french and spanish and try to sound romantic...........
Show you that bar Ben???? Not so sure your wife would want you there!!!! Lap dances are for us single guys!! :)))
Beem Your post are great and thanks for sharing your trip details. It gives many an insight as to what it's like to really be there on the ground. I'm a veteran myself. I have been to Ukraine 12 times since 2003. I have watched a lot of changes in Ukraine and the marriage agency business. I have been to Odessa three times. Great city to take a girl but didn't have much luck meeting a nice girl from there. You are on the right track by using your restaurant connection to meet the ladies. Forget about the marriage agencies. Especially in Odessa. If you ever see a familiar face in the night club such as your restaurant girls don't hesitate to approach them. Nine times out of ten you will be invited to join the party. Small parties I will join. If a big party I politely decline. You can always come back to the table to ask one of the ladies to dance. I'm also self taught Russian. My level is a 4 on a scale of 10. The girls tell me I have the vocabulary of a child and they just love my Russian. :) To be fluent would be a dream. It would increase our action tenfold. Kharkov is my playground. Found it to have the most number of beautiful girls in Ukraine. Good luck and keep up the great post. Maybe we will meet up for a beer one day in Ukraine. You seem like my kinda people.
Ben......trouble is my middle name!!!!!!!!! Is it lieing if you leave out a detail or two???
Hey Deano...how have you been???? You know, I never realized you have been around that long and have yet to find the right girl. You must be have lots of patience.....or having some great times!!! :))) I do think I stumbled onto a good thing with that restaurant. I too have not had great success with girls in odessa. Maybe I need to be there in summer when it is peak season for girls and the dress attire is very little clothes and lots of skin as I have been told!!!!!
I don't know my level of russian. Some things are easy while at times I am lost. I do create some laughter when I pronounce words wrong.....I never seem to get the gender right( never knew about that in russian). My vocabulary is pretty good but forming sentences is poor. Seems in english we use a lot more verbs in sentences than in russian language(not sure thou), at least that is how I speak!!!!! I always thing how dangerous I could be if I was fluent in russian...I think action would be 100fold......all those girls that western men pass up because they speak no english and best of all...no translator fees or being present!!!!
I've never been to Kharkov, one time almost, on my way to sumy. I think I was most impressed with girls in Nikolaev, of all cities I have visited.
I do have to say, Chisinau is not too big or too small, maybe it is similar Kharkov. Kiev is too big and Odessa is too small. I thought not too many western guys visited Moldova, due to difficulties getting in and out but I saw plenty of guys there, mostly from europe.
I met an Aussie guy while in Odessa, stayed at same apt complex as me, we talked awhile, told me he is there for a month and he spent $3000 to get there. He should well there, young good looking guy mid 30's. I think he just went there to hopefully meet a girl, he asked the girls in office about things to do and where to go. Since this is apt catering to westerners....I saw several guys bringing girls by apt...hmmmmmmm...wonder what they were doing?????? showing off computer???? :))))
i have the "Pimsleur's CDs" and am going through them now, when i have time. olya is going to teach me what i can and i think i will try to enrole in some course in kyiv in a few weeks. any thoughts on the best places to enrole while there? i will be there for 6 weeks, then back in the UK for a bit and then back in kyiv. cheers, /pete
pete, doesn't seem like you will have time for any classes, sounds like you will be doing some traveling while there....all the way to odesssa, right.
Did I get it right, you are going through a divorce at moment? And off with olya???
It is none of my business but shouldn't there be some time after your divorce before you go off and find another girl. What do we call it........the rebound....you don't want to be with a girl that is freshly divorced!!!!
hi beemer! yep, i'm just about to get divorced, but it's a bit strange as we're best friends again! true, i won't have any time for classes on my first visit, but i want to stay there for an extended period afterwards.
hopefully i'd like to travel all round ukraine, including odessa with olya. but after the first couple of weeks i'm going to look into jobs there. there seems to be quite a bit of out-sourcing of software/web work. i've found a few jobs advertised already and the office language is english in all of them, which is handy!
no rebound... me and my wife broke up over a year ago (jan '07), we just haven't got round to getting the divorce yet! and she (my wife) chrissie knows all about olya! lol!
A very rough rule on gender is if the noun ends in a or ya it is female and if it ends in a consonant it is male but not 100% of the time. Ending in an ee sound typically is an it or onee.
Just hope your plane does not land same time as one from turkey...as it will be a mess going through customs....and green lane will be closed and your chances of having your luggage opened increases.
Chisinau is very nice city, smaller than Kiev, so easier to get around. Check out Cricova!!!
