As several of the regular visitors to this forum know I have my lady coming over to live in January of 2004.The question I have is primarily aimed at the UK members, but anyone with any info is most gratefully accepted.
What I would like to know is.....Are there any Ukranian/Russian social groups......clubs etc based North-west UK.
It is something that I know would help greatly to adjust to the change of culture that my lady will experience.
Over to the gallery........
Check out Yahoo! groups, I find they have groups for just about everything, some even local. Also check the 'net, maybe there are some "closet Russians" in your town. Do some legwork I am sure you will find people your lady can relate to. You might also want to check the newspaper. A few weeks ago there was a small article in my local paper announcing that the 15,000th Russian has moved to the area.
Gladiator, i used to work in salford, there were a few ukranians that frequented the area. I would only presume that they have some type of gathering/associations, but don't know of any. Possibly you could look in that area, or wait until i bring mine home then they can form one together.
why not contact the Embassy's or Consulate's and ask them this question? I'd do this by fax so you'll get printed material back, and also this kind of correspondence is hardly ever ignored.
Gagiator. Havn't mentioned this before, but my ex's cousin married someone from the ukraine about 1 year ago. They now live in warrington, and i will be meeting them on friday night, will see if i can find out anything for you and pass it on.
The excellence of help here astounds me as usual........Thunder,that is one avenue I WILL explore.
Chrish.......any info you can put this way will be greatly appreciated.
Chip.....the Census Bureau is a great idea...they have even got a website I can check too.
Thanks again guys......I DO appreciate it.
So WU is a no- no then??????...........oh and by the way, stil heard nothing from you regarding the help requested Chip,e-mail me direct if u still need it.
Gladiator: I may be blasted for what I am about to say, but here is a little friendly advice (though not politically correct). I have seen several examples where Russian women come to the US and become frustrated at their lack of communications skills. They tend to look to the Russian community almost too much in an effort to relate, to the exclusion of all else. While I certainly would not want you to discourage her association with people who have a similar language and culture (here is the politically correct part) - be advised that it may actually hinder her in assimilating to a new culture and society.
All advice is very gratefully received Jet,and be assured you would not be "blasted"from me for saying so.
It is something I have considered, and to be honest am still weighing up the pro's and cons too......watch this space.
Gladiator, sorry they were unable to come on the night, and since then i have been seriously ill with flu. The father in law is going to arrange for a meeting with them as soon as i am completely recovered.
Also when you lady comes over, i was wondering if you would be able to give some more advice, as i know that you are not far away.
